Finally got enough things trimmed and clearanced, pulled the Suburban Drivers side cargo wall over 6" forming the first half of the boat tail. It was suprising how many different places wanted to bind up...

6" is a good amount of taper on that long and large body. It's gonna look cool and perform well.

Yesterday, I bought another car. 1973 Fiat 124 Special. This one is auto and has A/C. Pretty solid overall. Nicer condition than the civic. If the engine spins (haven't tried yet) then I think I can get it to fire pretty easily. Here is a pic from the ad.

That is great. Picture does not display though. A question for anyone: how much damage might I cause if I run a Honda engine from cold, at idle, for about 20 seconds, without any oil. I was in the middle of an oil change and got distracted. While it ran it had a hunting idle below normal--between maybe 1200 and 1700, but I remember seeing a moment of almost stable ~1400 RPMs maybe once maybe twice just before I realized the mistake and turned it off. THOUGHTS?

Not good, but you didn’t drive it to the parts store for oil/filter...after draining the oil like one customer of mine did once. Probably ok, might be worth a quick compression test.

I changed the alternator on my Civic. A bit more of a bear to maneuver in and out than it should have been, but it’s all good now. It wasn’t charging over about 3300rpm, so I knew the day was coming when it would fail...and it did. The upshot is that I got an excuse to bang the rev limiter a couple of times to verify the fix and still got 32.x mpg when I got home. Sweet little revver that D16 engine, but fast it is not.

Probably fine. Usually enough oil film left to keep parts moving for a bit. Project farm did a video of engines with no oil. They lasted quite awhile (~20 mins).

In addition to what Matt says, I think you might have been lucky it was just for 20 seconds. There will still be some oil left on the walls or in cracks, you are still a 'long' time away of burning it all. So it is not that the engine was completely dry.

I pulled the valve cover off the Fiat. It doesn't look very great. I then put some compressed air in the cylinder that was on the compression stroke and nothing happened. Little to no hissing either. So the engine is stuck. Looks like it will be put on hold until I get farther on the civic and other projects. I will keep my eye out for some new (second hand) tires though so I can put it back on the ground and off the dollies. Once I get some practice replacing windshields I will pull this one off and re-seal it. The front is leaking so I threw a large tarp over the car for now.

I am gonna be way impressed if you save that valvetrain. And thanks for the reassurances on my somewhat botched oil change, guys. I sounds and drives the same today, so... after work I will do some more prep for my SMOG test.

I had the same thought: it takes many minutes to destroy an engine without oil in the pan.
