Santa is bringing me something to the tune of 1,700 pounds of high grade anthracite.
I was really bad this year.

This anthracite is supposed to burn with a most no smoke, cleaner than most wood.
Which I can see. Burning an sappy piece of cider is like soaking a log in used motor oil then burning it.
Burning pine/spruce lumber scraps can burn with a lot of black smoke.

We got a new woodstove last year, retiring the 1980's Federal Airtight. That old stove would pour big clouds of smoke out the chimney after reload. This new Jotul, never. It never, ever, emits anywhere near as much smoke. In fact I pretty much never see or smell any at all. Pretty impressive.

Does this look like something to burn wood in? The components seem to be (from other sources) a damperless flue, the flat metal plate at the back and the two electrodes/andirons at the front.

The flat Earth people are suggesting these were free energy heating devices powered by fractal antennas on the top of spires, along with a dose of historical revisionism. I find this fascinating in light of the line from 1984, "He who controls the past controls the future...."

My high-yield gas burning central heating unit exhausts almost no CO or other greenhouse gases.
Most of the exhaust heat gets used to heat the intake air, so on cold days it does not even reacjh boiling point and condense drips down into a container. It is pretty much clean water.

But they all are, you can't buy less efficient CH units anymore.

Even so, the end to that is coming.
More and more new houses have no gas anymore. A connection to the gas network used to be mandatory, now it comes at a premium. Heat pumps, solar collectors/boiler/preheaters and PV panels to compensate for the pump electricity usage, induction cooking and extreme heat isolation with controlled heat exchanger ventilation are the norm for new buildings.

They built a new residential area next to the municipal swimming pool we frequent, all of the hundreds of houses there are built like that. Concrete house, entirely plated with a foot of foam, then a brick layer around that. Climate neutral, supposedly, with just 8 to 10 PV panels each...!

Do you have any links or any more information on the design of these houses? How many days below 0C do you have each year? No need to sink a geothermal well for each home?

I don't want to hijack the thread (more that now already) so I'll keep it short not overly long:
This is the project: https://www.bnw.ballast-nedam.nl/pro...in-helsdingen/. It has 95 free standing units (i thought there were more) and there are 3 variants, by energy level (Energy Performance Coefficient, the average energy efficiency, primarily heat retaining, of houses built in 1990).
Part complies to EPC 0.4 (the legal mandatory limit), part EPC 0 (self sufficient for heating), part climate neutral: '0 on the meter' (no net energy consumption whatsoever). Not all are climate neutral though, but then none take much to keep warm.

8 cm of walled foam insulation is enough for EPC 0.4, but I saw the builders stack and glue the big foam blocks in a bricklike way around the corners; those must have been at least 20 cm thick. Add to that a concrete inner house and brick outer skin, that makes the windows look like tunnels.

I saw them mount small window frames with heavy equipment. Must be either triple layer or thick double layer glass with special coating...

Building like that adds to the cost, but we are a densely populated country with soggy ground and high ground prices.
In the west the ground prices often exceed building cost even though the foundation often consists of 2 rows of reinforced concrete poles 20-30 meter deep into the ground. So as new houses have deep sunken costs it makes little sense to build them poorly; they'd still be expensive.
