I will be purchasing my next vehicle in about 10 years. We'll see if either of these survive until then.

I don't need a truck often (once a month minimum, 4 times a month maximum), but if I'm going to use just one vehicle ... it will likely be a van or a truck

Like it or not, if I were going to make an electric truck I'd rather make it more similar to a VW Transporter or those Asian forward-control compact trucks. Not to mention those rear-engined Volkswagens actually have some reasonable off-road performance as far as 2WD can do...

The reason to keep the 'nose' for a truck is the same reason to keep it for a car... crash energy absorption.

Why do Tesla cars do so well in the crash testing? because they use that space to help reduce the forces felt by the occupants. With a forward control style cab, could they design it to absorb as much? I am no expert, but I would think more space = more time, and more time means the occupant would be better served in a crash.

Now, if you are talking an in city, non-highway delivery truck or something, where the maximum expected speed is below 45 MPH, then I could see making that trade off.

I definitely see the boxier design as a farm truck (as that is what it is really designed for) and the Rivian truck being more the main stream (and not commercial or trades) market.

I would not turn down either if you were going to give me one, but either it has to tow a trailer with my motorcycle or the bed has to be big enough for my motorcycle... and both do that, but in a market that overvalues pickup truck form, not sure a new one will be within my price range.

Same reason I own a Subaru Outback vs a Jeep or pickup right now. It cost less, does what I need, and gets better mileage than any other vehicle I was looking at.

The two-box design evolved directly from the horse and wagon.

The reason for putting the engine in back is to enable the frunk as crash absorption. Or, in the case of Tesla, between the wheels.

The reason for keeping it is so the windshield isn't approaching horizontal.

Rivian has a $350 million investor

Is there not a dedicated thread?

If it isn't an all-new steel Type II variant* with VW eUp! drivetrain it's hard to care.

*23-window bus, panel, single/double cab, Swedish military bubble-top.

Not sure if I would get an eUp! drivetrain if I were willing to make an electric Type II. Possibly I'd be tempted to try a pair of motor-generators from some BAS-Hybrid at the rear end with torque vectoring in order to emulate a differential, and even though there will be enough room for a bank of batteries inside the stock engine bay and that would improve traction on loose terrain, at least one extra motor-generator on the front-end even if it required a differential wouldn't be out of question at all.

It’s funny to think that Rivians sole source of income (besides investors) was renting the indoor and outdoor space around the shuttered Mitsubishi plant for VW to store dieselgate cars

As far as I know that is still the only net positive income they get.
