I'd say coming in a little high is probably better for wear, as the revs are already falling as it engages, vs the clutch having to pull them up against engine braking.

I'd be surprised if the silencer makes any noticeable difference on vs off. Backpressure isn't the key (unless it's excessive), fast, linear flow is what matters.

There are calculations that...

Odin - It's not that they don't know how to make an auto, it's that they were going for a comfortable riding, not harsh auto, rather than an efficient auto.

^ Exactly. A good part of it is driving a vehicle you want and/or need, and then getting the most out of it. If it weren't for Ecomodder, I'd be getting about 10 - 11 mpg city, rather than the 13+...

I'd agree with the CV suggestion. V8s get perfectly good highway mileage, provided they're geared tall enough.

Honestly, a properly flowing and working cat provides very little backpressure, and therefore will make very little (if any) difference in both power and mpg.

Flow speed makes torque, not...

^ I agree. Regardless of FWD/4WD/AWD/RWD, the good tires belong on the front. I'd much rather deal with some oversteer than not be able to stop or turn. Understeer sucks bigtime.

If it's not getting over 200*, it's fine. 200 - 210 is normal operating temp for these. Running colder hurts power and mpg. The 4.0 doesn't like running cold. The V8s don't mind it as much, but...

As WDB said, with a manual tranny, pop it in neutral, and release the clutch, and it won't hurt anything.

However, there are a few manual trannies (not many) that require the engine to be...

Some variance, and up to 20* or so above t-stat temp is normal. However, 240* is not. If the car has an electric fan, make sure it's working properly, and not getting weak. If it's a mechanical...

XJguy - If the mods are removable, they won't hurt resale value. Plus, if he can give it a bit better mpg, without sacrificing functionality, why not?

I agree. It kills me every time I see a soccer mom in a suburban doing 80+ on the highway, probably getting 10 - 12 mpg. For me to get that in the Jeep, I'd have to be doing well over 90. At 55 -...

With the shift kit in, you've upped the line pressure at any given point in the curve, so the lower line pressure (lower on the curve) when it thinks you're being lighter on the gas isn't dropping...

With 8+ psi of boost, even with the low compression (although it depends on the cam somewhat), you'll probably start pinging before you overshoot the optimum timing.

Diesels like cold air and hot coolant. Most modern diesels use 195* thermostats, a few even use 203* (common performance mod on powerstrokes). In a diesel, the hotter engine burns fuel better,...

I don't know if that's still true. While an automatic with the TC unlocked is pretty inefficient, they don't coast badly.

The Cherokee (XJ) is MPI if it has the 4.0 I6 (available 87-01). The fuel injection system and engine power output are different from 87-90 vs later years, however.

A little tip for climbing hills in situations like that - in most cars with a 4 speed auto that only locks the TC in 4th, most will lock up in 3rd at a somewhat lower speed if you turn OD off.
