I'd say coming in a little high is probably better for wear, as the revs are already falling as it engages, vs the clutch having to pull them up against engine braking.

I'd be surprised if the silencer makes any noticeable difference on vs off. Backpressure isn't the key (unless it's excessive), fast, linear flow is what matters.
There are calculations that...

Odin - It's not that they don't know how to make an auto, it's that they were going for a comfortable riding, not harsh auto, rather than an efficient auto.

I'd agree with the CV suggestion. V8s get perfectly good highway mileage, provided they're geared tall enough.

Honestly, a properly flowing and working cat provides very little backpressure, and therefore will make very little (if any) difference in both power and mpg.
Flow speed makes torque, not...

If it's not getting over 200*, it's fine. 200 - 210 is normal operating temp for these. Running colder hurts power and mpg. The 4.0 doesn't like running cold. The V8s don't mind it as much, but...

With 8+ psi of boost, even with the low compression (although it depends on the cam somewhat), you'll probably start pinging before you overshoot the optimum timing.
