CO2 isn't a bad refrigerant gas, but the problem is that it has a whole lot more pressure inside the system. Where a typical auto AC system might reach 300 or so PSI, a carbon dioxide system operates...

If you are operating the system within the envelope of r134a, it's not too hard to beat. Propane especially is more forgiving of superheat because it has higher specific heat than r134a.

Refrigerant grade propane is r290. It has roughly the same pressure range as r22. Butane and isobutane both have lower pressures than r134a. If you are running a txv you'll have to run a blend....
