Paul,

etischer's AC controller MOD thread on DIYElectriCar is a great read
though he has taken an existing VFD and modified it. He covers a lot
of important issues and you will find it...

Paul and Sabrina's Cheap 3 Phase Inverter (AC Controller) with Field Oriented Control

Let's face it, AC is better than DC! An AC motor will last forever, since there are no brushes to wear out. You get regenerative braking for free, which both recharges the batteries, and saves the...

I don't think it works that way. I've been thinking about this all day! It has given me a headache, and here's what I think I know:

The Torque-RPM curve is approximately a straight line for a DC...

Great question! There's 3 pins. Gate, Source, and Drain. Source is connected to ground. When gate is near 0 volts (compared to source, which is ground), the resistance from Drain to Source is...

You got it Paul.

Also, keep in mind that batteries, especially lead-acid, care a lot about how many AMPS are being pulled out of them. If you are pulling twice as many amps from a battery, you...

Test done!

Here are the results of what I tried:

max rpm was completely unrelated to current limit. 24v max rpm was twice as fast as 12v. 36v was too fast to count, so I'm guessing that 36v max rpm was 3...

Ooooh, Ooooh, Pick Me!!! No, Wait... I mean, you gotta try something!!! This is the perfect time to do some research on something I've been hearing about, but haven't seen any real proof yet.

Current limiting implemented!

I thought I cooked the current sensor, but it still works! Bam! The specs say you can store the dang thing at 180 degC! That should have been a clue that it's sort of big, bad, and feisty!

So,...

You said that you have alot of space available on the chip, right?

Get a binary switch, and write two diff programs to two cells on the same chip... like if you have a 512 chip, write 2x256 to it....

I finally figured out how to use the STK500 as an in system programmer (ISP). So, I can add a 6 pin plug on the outside of the controller so that the microcontroller can be reprogrammed while...

Well, you can do it with lexan too, but IIRC, polycarbonate lets off fumes that you don't really want to be breathing... and it's very soft as far as polyplastic materials go, so it's quite easy to...

Controller mostly done

The controller is mostly assembled. I decided to put 5 mosfets and 5 diodes in it, so it should now be a 84v (well, anything safely under 100v) 100amp controller if it wasn't for the crappy bus bars...

Capacitors added, and a few wires

The power board is nearing completion. I need to add the mosfets and diodes, but first I need to attach them to a heat sink, since there would be no room for screwing them in if I soldered them in...

gentle throttle ramp-up added to software

New feature added! Gentle Ramp up of throttle. There's a problem if you accelerate too fast from 0 RPM. A motor has about 0.01 Ohms of internal resistance, or even as small as 0.001 Ohms for a...
