'05 Corolla fuel consumption very high.
 

Hi I am new to this forum and I guess this is the right section to post this question. I am a NOOB in CAR's

I have a 2005 Toyota Corolla 1.8L,recently I noticed that the fuel consumption seems to be very high. Can anyone tell me what would be the issue with the car ?

The spark plugs was changed a month ago, as well as the timing belt.Tires were replaced 6 Months ago (I guess)

The transmission oil, engine oil, radiator coolant all were changed just a month ago.

What IS the consumption?

Newer tires have higher rolling resistance. Air pressure?

Excess weight in car?

Impractical/unknowable issue, like mice living in the engine bay or glove box?

Just now I have fully re-fuelled my car.

How can I check air pressure ? Is it written on the tires ? Oh an BTW the tires were replaced 6 months ago and the fuel consumption was normal at that time.

No excess weight.

The engine is clean.

The timing belt concerns me. It's quite possible the timing is off, causing the engine to run too rich. It would help us if we knew your MPG before, and then after. Do you remember specifically the first tank you noticed consumption going up? Who did the timing belt? Ask them to double check the timing on the car, because you noticed fuel consumption go way up after they did the work.

Go buy a tire pressure gauge from any major auto parts store or even Wal Mart. It's just like a bike tire. Unscrew the cap and check the pressure all around. Should be at least 30 PSI.

Do you have any dash lights on like the check engine light?

Max PSI is the general advice around here. I run 40% over max.

I take it refuelling this time means you won't know MPG until next tank, then.

So the tire pressure are all around 30.

2 Days back I filled my tank, now the petrol gauge is showing half and I have driven 106 KM. Usually I used to get 450-500 KM with full tank.

What have you changed? Have you tried increasing the tire pressure?

A timing belt change may destroy FE if the timing is offset during the process. One to look out for.

Does the engine run smooth when idling? An unfiring spark plug halves your economy and spoils performance.

How does it coast? (is it a manual or an auto?)
What happens when you put it in neutral, does it maintain speed or lose it quickly?
If the latter something's wrong with the tires, wheel alignment or drivetrain beyond the tranny. If it coasts fine the problem is ahead of that.

Raising tire pressure should help FE a bit. If it helps a lot, like more than 10%, then your wheel alingment is likely out.

It is an Automatic Transmission.

No, I have done wheel re-alignment along with it and steering doesn't move while going straight.
