1.8L Prius ICE 'idle' fuel consumption
Hi,
When a Prius is over the hybrid threshold, 42 mph for 1.5L and 46 mph for the 1.8L, the control laws require the engine continue to run. By shifting into "N", all power to and from the two motor generators is removed and the engine controller will continue to run the ICE with no load . . . it is at the closest the engine can be to idle:
So using this set of data, we can calculate: 2.39 gm/sec air (14.7 stoich ratio) 0.1625 gm/sec fuel (3,600 sec/hr) 585 gm/hr fuel (2,659 gm/gal) 0.22 gal/hr (73 miles/hr) 331.7 miles/gal Bob Wilson |
Dude if you think you're gonna fare better in a head-on with a full-frame econoline you're just kidding yourself. For one thing theres not much sheet metal in front of you. Another thing is you have a thick steel frame. Whats that gonna do? Well it will transfer the impact to the other vehicle of course, and also, to you. Its well proven that a vehicle that folds up like a pop can is better. I would much rather have the body of my car absorb an impact than my spinal column.

I wonder how it compares to the previous gen's 1.6L.
It's easy to make an Insight idle, in which case it burns 0.11gph. I should repeat that trial with the headlights on and see if it's 0.13gph like I predict. Hmm, could it really be 0.09gph with zero 12V load instead of the 200W base load? Quote:

Thanks for the table tip . . . I'm not sure it is any better due to the larger number of gratis line feeds. Bob Wilson |
