29 Tips to Go Green

a few of those are questionable but theyre pretty good

A good whiff of maggot-infested rancid meat usually does the trick for me! :p

just spend a week without buying *anything*
then stretch it up to a month, but you can only buy food.

at the core, consumerism is the least 'green' habit in the 1st world. Put a dent in that, and you'll make a difference.

Or... get a job as a solar panel/home wind installer. Your net impact is pretty well assured to be carbon-negative.

sandcruiser, that's good advice!

I'm invisible to retailers and that's a good thing.

I've was doing pretty good about not buying stuff until I splurged on a new rear top case for the scooter....

thats another i do

95% of the things i buy are secondhand, on sale, used, etc

why buy new when you can find one for half the price in near mint condition

(most of my food are on sale or reduced)

i eat meat though

it tastes good

@aloha: Your next step would be to assess the REAL price of the meat (let's use beef for example) of your choice (with all the resources, environmental impact, and government subsidy money required to put one pound of beef in your refrigerator) versus the real price of a fish that you go catch for yourself, or some non-animal protein (tofu, tempeh, seitan). Then figure out how much better the beef tastes than other more sustainable sources of protein and try to quantify the margin by which the beef tastes better with a dollar value. I've found this value to be very negative, hence I don't eat beef. This is unequivocally a "green" choice, but a choice for you to make nonetheless. I wish the subsidies were a choice too, but don't get me started on that. A good "green" choice any day of the week would be to buy organic. It's more expensive because ALL of the cost is there. Just mind what organization certified a farm as "organic." A little bit of research is required.

Or you could sit down and eat that juicy steak or burger, actually enjoy it, and not worry about it.

alohaspirit 07-24-2009 10:27 PM

i wish i could go hunt in my area (wild pig)

i neither have the license or the place to prepare and store it

but you know one day i just might

my family does fish though

and at least i take protein supplements (soy/whey) to offset the meat
;)

Saw a `whole bunch of green colours today- at least 10! Krylon, I think....

.... NO!! Tomatoes are red..... :D

Mix blue and yellow. Green.

Be envious of someone else. Green.

:P

In all seriousness, now that I've poked fun, going green is ALOT more than "10 tips". Everyone in the world, at some point, does something green, even if they don't know it or not.

First tip I'd have for you, never refer to being green as being "green". Don't put it in quotes, as the quotes tend to absord the associated feeling with being green. It's not fake, it's a mind set, and a way of life. You don't slam the door in the face of "Salesmen", do you? No, you slam the door in the face of salesmen. See the difference?

Until you truly believe that green is a mindset, a way of life, instead of just something you can turn on and off, don't expect to truly be green.

Second tip: There is absolutely no way that you can just change over night. Change is VERY difficult to accept. As a result of this truth, I always see Reel Mowers, Electric Mowers, etc... (Green items) for sale at ridiculous prices. I saw an ad the other day for a reel mower which stated "Obviously, my resolve for going "green" is greater than my inertia."

Two things about that... This guy had less than 100SqFt of yard. He uses a riding mower. That's not green.

Second thing about that ad: What did you notice about what he said? The quotes! Damn right, you're not going to stick to it, when you look at it like it's a kook-thing!.

Third tip: Learn about nature. Stop reading books, and LEARN about nature. Go for a walk in the woods. Sit on a rotting stump, watch the ants crawl, foraging for food. Count the leaves on a sapling. Listen to the sounds, smell the smells. Taste the air. You learn alot about yourself when you can breathe freely.

I don't eat beef except once in a great while. I refuse to pay for it, though, unless it's DEEP on sale. Like 1/2 off. Or free. I'll eat anything that's free, just about.
