157mpg VW hybrid

Volkswagen's 157 mpg Cross Coupé concept

It's a heavy porker and no doubt will cost a fortune, but could be interesting nonetheless.

It looks to me like the gallons are imperial which converts to 130.5mpg US...

I think their solution is to throw more batteries at the problem, weight it 90% electric 10%ICE and call it a "Hybrid." Don't know how else you can get those numbers that beast.

You got it. You can call it any mpg you want. It probably gets 30 mpg on gas, being heavier and boxier than the Volt. Like GM did early on with the Volt, you pick a daily drive that seems believable: let's say 30 miles on electricity and 6 on gas. 6/30= .2 gallons .2 gallons for 36 miles = 180 MPG! Wow, they are being conservative.

Want a flashier number? Don't change the car, just re-rig the numbers. 30 miles on electricity, 2 on gasoline. 2/30 = .066 gallons. 32 miles on .066 gallons = 485 MPG.
