1993 Geo Metro XFI (getting 40 MPG on 1.5 cylinders but would like 55 on 3)

Hi,

Well, this is my first day and first post. I have a 1993 Geo Metro that I have had for 2 years. I bought it from a guy in Arizona in 2008. It now has 245,000.00. I put a timing belt on it resently and the mechanice did a compression check and the 1st had 30 psi, the second had 140 and the third had 90. . So I need a rebuild or a mechanic that is close to upstate, sc that knows these engines inside and out. I just a new clutch put in and that mechanic said the was a noise in the fifth gear. Since I have had the car it has made a whiring noise in fifth gear. I thought it was normal. But since he told me that I have noticed that 1-4 are as quite as can be. Does anyone have a XFI transmission they would like to part with? I am 53 and use to drive a suburban but when they gas got high 2-3 years back I did research and picked this car as a great mpg saver. By the way I am still getting 40 mpg on 1 1/2 cylinders but would like 55 to 60.

Thanks for looking.

Deas

The only difference between the XFi transmission and all the other Metro & Swift 5-speed models is the final drive (taller F.D. in the XFi than most other models). So you could get any transmission and swap the F.D. over.

Since you've been driving it like this for 2 years, I'd be tempted to deal with the engine first, unless you're going to bite the bullet & do everything at once.

Even factoring in the impending repairs, I bet you've saved a few coins over the Suburban!
