1995 Camaro LT1 gas mileage
Not many of my performance oriented friends really appreciate my goals for fuel economy in the cars I build. I figure someone here might..
One notable experience, 275 mile trip from Upstate NY to Long Island NY, I averaged 32 MPG in my 370 HP 95 convertible Camaro. Stock height, stock tires and rims, LT1, T-56 6 speed, 3.23 rear ratio(overall drive ratio of 1.615). Engine mods; High flow; Moroso air filter and intake, Granatelli MAF, Pacesetter headers and y-pipe, 3" catalytic converter, air foil on throttle body. 11:1 compression, 1.52 full roller rockers. Stock cam, heads, intake, throttle body, injectors, tune, etc. Avg speed 70-80 MPH (yes that high) on highways, with some stop and go traffic through the city. Couldn't believe how much gas I still had when I got home. Sick of hearing about how much of a gas guzzler my car is, cuz its not. Around town I avg 17-19 MPG driving like an *hole. But that's my choice :D |
While my '80s Camaros didn't have nearly the power yours has, I was pleased with the 30+ mpg highway I was getting.
A friend had a v6 Firebird and was upset that I was doing better than he was. Not wanting to say anything about his driving style, I just told him my 305 just wasn't having to work as hard. |
The LSx boys seem to get great MPG as well which makes even me (big Mustang nut) take note. I wish I would allow myself to be ok with ******* swaps cause ide love to have the power and efficiency of as LS1/6speed swap in my 90 coupe!!! Guess Ill have to wait until the Coyote 5.0 swap gets a bit cheaper LOL. Thats great of you tho, awesome to have power and MPG!

my 4.6 does "ok". If I could do it all over again, I may have chose to leave my stock 3.31 gears in and save the $$ spent on the 3.73's for something else. |

Keeping the rpm down works well in V8s and the like. If you slow down a bit on the motorway, but be sure to keep it in top gear, you'll be pushing 35mpg. |

yeah, mine has the 5 speed auto.

i can get 30-35 mpg out of my '95 mustang gt running 60-70 and its a 4 speed auto!

Those are good numbers but almost every car is great on the highway, especialy sports cars because of the low drag. It's the city driving that kills. My escape gets 30mpg on the highway but ~15 mpg in the city

The problem is you still get poor average mpg. If you live on a freeway and rarely drive in town then you have a point but quoting hwy only mpg numbers is false advertisement. It's like all these new compact cars claiming hybrid-like mpg by quoting hwy only mpg when in reality they are only good for 30mpg-35mpg average. A hybrid like the Prius is good for 50mpg average.
I 'mnot slamming your car. I raced a 2000 Trans AM, a 2000 C5, and an 800hp GMC Sierra before buying my Prius. While my TA could pull 30mpg on highway trips it was still only a 24mpg car on average. Well before the 4400 stall and piglet cam. lol You could always try some fuel economy mods like narrower LRR tires but they wouldn't be useful when you decide to drive like an asshole. :) However, driving using hypermiling techniques can't dramatically improve your mpg without spending any money or ruining performance. |
its not false advertisement if i state that i was cruising at 60-70 while getting those mpg numbers ;)

Just giving you a hard time man. I used to run NorcalLS1 which turned into NorcalLSx. |
mistaken identity is a funny thing. you are correct the author of this post said his his car wasnt a gas guzzler. i on the other hand havent said anything of the sort as i am not the author of this post

I must be doing something wrong. I average better fuel economy commuting with my Mustang (and my F-250) than I do on road trips. It may have something to do with aerodynamics. :)
