1999 civic dx hatch
Hello all. Just purchased an all stock 1999 civic dx hatchback. 72k on the engine and tranny. She runs like a champ. Currently 303 miles with well over 1/4 of the tank left. Hopefully i can get to 400 miles on this tank. Looking for any suggestions or additions to help with better fuel efficiency. Usually drive 60-65 mph and mostly on the highway. Thanks, take care.

Is it a manual transmission? If so, I have nearly the same car, or had nearly the same car before mods. The usual simple stuff true for most cars will help you: pump up the tires. Mine are at 55-60 psi most of the time. Get a ScanGuage or UltraGauge (it will pay for itself through improved fuel economy) and then learn to drive at 75% - 80% load, shifting at 2000 rpm, give or take 100. An air dam and grill blocks are easy and cheap to make and have helped me a lot. My best engine mods were to get rid of power steering. It was only an option on this lightweight car. You don't really need it. I have done many other mods, all detailed on my car's page, often with links, meant to help new people as well as just document my process a little.
WELCOME! Start a fuel log so you can track progress over time. |
yeah its a manual. shifts like butter too. I was thinking about swapping out the stock wheels with some vx or hx wheels. should help reduce the weight of the car.

That's pretty low miles on it for how old it is. If you plan on keeping it til it dies, I hope you like it. My '97 DX sedan had over 230k when I sold it a couple years ago and is still going strong (probably over 250k by now). Burned about a quart of oil between changes, likely the valve guides according to the internet. Pretty much just change the oil, water pump, and timing belt at the right intervals and the drivetrain should last just about forever.

Yeah I was very very fortunate to find this car. No leaks, no dents. Only damage is on the plastic wheel covers and a rip in the sun visor. Not a bad deal for $3400 including tax and title.Attachment 14221
