199k, original brakes

Not a fuel economy success per se, but another reason manual transmission is the way to go. I had to pull the rear brake drum off my 94 F150 the other day because the axle seal started to leak. When I got the wheel off I saw it still had the little star clips the assembly line uses to hold the drum on as it rolls through the plant.

This pickup is 25 years old, has gone nearly 200k miles, and that drum has never needed to be taken off. In fact the brake shoes are completely fine, and if that seal (which is also the factory equipped one) wouldn't have leaked it still wouldn't have been taken off.

My '94 F150 also proudly wears all original brakes except for some hard lines which rusted out.

To be fair, I've only had it for about 10k of those miles, but the previous owner was meticulous on upkeep, cleanliness, and was obviously a conservative driver.

That said, I downshift and hardly ever use the brakes.

I've had my '02 Escort since 2008. It had 79,xxx miles when I got it. It's now got 202,xxx miles and still has the brakes on it that were on it when I bought it. I haven't checked the rear shoes lately but, I checked the front pads a few months ago when changing tie rod ends and they were still around 50%.

I bought this truck new. It still has the original brakes at 154,000 miles. The pads look like they will go well over 200,000 miles, except that I expect to sell the truck well before then.
