1st 40 mpg tank

I know it's not a big deal for a lot of you, but last night at about 9:55pm it was incredibly satisfying to see the average tic over from 39.9

i'm surprised how addicting squeezing mpg out of my car can be

that was the mpg at the end of the tank, right before I refilled, 466 miles. I can do better......

Quite true, its only going to get harder to keep beating that. But, good job!

thanks guys! this was more highway than normal...i doubt my next few tanks will be that successful

i think my onboard mpg calculator doesn't take EOC into consideration....for whatever reason it always seems a little off compared to the calculation on this site

i'm assuming it also has to do with variations in filling the tank...i'm a first click guy, i figured that tank fill variations will average out as long as i'm consistent

They'll average out over time, yes. I prefer to fill until I can see the fuel, so I know the calcs (and gauges) are accurate.

Congrats on reaching that milestone.

That makes sense because you are operating outside of the design parameters.

On my Scangauge 1 in my S-Series, EOC still showns an RPM of 61 when the RPM is 0. The SG ends up calculating MPG as 10*MPH. Don't know why, but there it is.

When I used to EOC in a 5 speed MT Saturn, my speedometer/odometer did not register mph / distance traveled while the key was off (one notch short of locking the steering wheel. I changed the way I did it to turning the engine off and then putting the key back to run. THEN, the speedometer and odometer would continue to register.

Good going, gasstingy!!

To get the SG to read EOC:

The ScanGauge has an "Engine Type" setting.
Set it to "Hybrid".
Then it will continue to clock miles - but the ignition has to be on.
You have to do as gasstingy wrote, and turn the key back to on without letting the engine start.

Good catch. I forgot to mention that I do the same. That's another reason for doing an engine kill-switch. If you don't have to turn the key, the car's odo and speedo will continue to register.

yeah, the odometer (including the trip odo) and spedo work work with the engine off, it's just the mpg calculators don't...which is kinda too bad

Fr3AkAzOiD 12-25-2009 09:38 PM

The mpg calculators do work it's just that they don't compute untill the engine is turned back on. If you check your avg mpg calculator and then turn the engine off for an EOC, when you bump start it back on at the bottom of the hill the avg mpg will jump up. At least on the '08 XFE thats how it works.

Also I have noticed that my avg mpg calculator is pretty accurate, it usualy registers within 0.5 mpg below to 1.0 mpg above what my first click tank math comes out to and I always use the same station and same pump to do my fillups.

80% of the time I can figure my tank math will come out to be about 0.4 mpg less then what my onboard calculator comes up with.

you're right; I tried it during a long EOC this morning and the mpg average did jump up when I bump started again....cool!

Glad I could be of assistance.
