1zz Celica Gear Ratio

So, I have a 2001 Celica and I beleive the syncro in 3rd is starting to go out. If I have to rebuild/replace the 5 speed transmission is there a better geared transmission? corolla?

I know there must be other transmissions that will bolt to the 1zzfe engine with a better FE ratio but I am having a hard time finding any information about the gear ratio in the celicas or anyother vehicle. Any help would be appreciated.

I know I could not take a C60 trans and bolt it to a 4AGE block. People who do it wind up swapping the cases to make it work. So you would need to do the same (case swap) to use a C52, C160, or corrola transmsison. I remember there was some highly geared corrola or tercel transmission, but forget what code it was. I always wanted to combine a 4AFE setup with that tranmission, but never did. Instead I just used the C160 with a 4aGe 16v, silvertop 20v, and eventually a blacktop 20v. Those were more performace driven but still got 40+ mpg.

Hello there, I've got the same engine/transmission as you.

All of the actual gearsets for any of the 1ZZ/2ZZ transmissions work with each other, so what you'd be looking for is either a 0.725 5th gear (pulled from a manual transmission Corolla, or bought from Toyota directly (about 230 dollars) or monkeywrenchracing (a little more than Toyota I think, but easier to order), or a whole new transmission with the 3.9something final drive ratio. Since you have a Celica and not an MR2 things are easier since the shift linkages don't need modification.

The best place to look is junked Corollas, because there's no way you're going to find an intact 6 speed to pull stuff from. I'm not sure how easy a MT Corolla transmission is to find though. They go for 2000 dollars on the market.

While you're only dropping highway rpm ~10%, it might be worth it since the 1ZZ loses efficiency pretty fast over 3000rpm, and 3500rpm is only about 64mph in these cars (if you have the same tire diameter as me, which I am not 100% sure about). If you get the Corolla final drive as well you'll have 20% ish rpm reduction which will be very significant, but your acceleration will suffer a bit especially since these are 5 speeds not 6, and the gear ratios have a rather wide spread in 1-4.

By the way, as a fellow early 1ZZ owner, does your engine burn oil? I still haven't driven this 1000 miles yet, but I did get an oil change and the oil level has been dropping slowly but surely (thankfully well under the 1qt/1000 miles that some people see, it's dropped about 1.5mm on the dipstick after 600 miles). Bit of a problem because I'd like to use synthetic oil to lower cold start viscosity, but I don't want it burning off and wasting it. With the high rpms these engines turn thanks to the transmission I feel like oil plays a big part in fuel economy.

Pretty sure the 8th gen Corolla c59 is what you are looking for. .725 5th gear and I think 3.25 final. You may have to keep your case tho.

My daughters scion xa is screaming ... for this swap so I hope Doax chimes in as he is the expert this toyota gearing stuff

There is no 3.25 final C5x or C6x transmission made for 1ZZ/2ZZ engines, they only range from 4.529 to 3.941 or so. 3.941 is quite tall for a 1.8L engine, though maybe not by ecomodder standards. C59 is correct though, despite Wikipedia saying it's got a 0.815 5th it actually has a 0.725.

The C50 is what the 1NZs are mated to, and in all honesty they're not geared too bad at 3.722 final drive ratio. The 0.725 5th gear for the C56/C59/C60etc. might work in the C50 but I can't say as I've never heard of anyone doing it. It's known that the C60 bolts to 1ZZs without too much trouble, and someone has done a 1NZ + C60 combo but he made a custom adapter plate and some slight modifications to make it work.

I'm pretty sure the 8th gen corolla's FD is 3.722. Then in the 9th gen it switched to 3.9

arcosine 12-05-2012 06:58 AM

The 3.722 final and the .725 fifth is as good as it gets for Toyota Corollas.

No, Serial I don't have any troubles with oil. Recently completed my second oil change and got every drop back. I am running a semi synthetic 5-30w.

strange306 12-09-2012 02:55 AM

So, If I have all of this right I am looking for a 1998-2003 corolla 5-speed behind a 1zz.

2000-2005 Celica 1zzfe engine
1st- 3.166
2nd- 1.904
3rd- 1.310
4th- 0.969
5th- 0.815
Rev- 3.250
Final- 3.941

1998-2003 Corolla 1zzfe engine
1st- 3.166
2nd- 1.904
3rd- 1.310
4th- 0.885
5th- 0.725
Rev- 3.250
Final- 3.722

Is that correct?

serialk11r 12-09-2012 03:09 AM

Errr, just look at the Wikipedia article on Toyota C transmissions.

The 1991-1998 Corollas are 3.722 apparently, but the 1ZZ powered Corollas are 3.941 and up. I don't know if the C50 bolts straight to the 1ZZ, I'd be safe and just get a transmission mated to a 1ZZ. You'll have better acceleration anyways.

Good to hear your 1ZZ doesn't burn oil, so many of the early 1ZZs do. I'm on 10W-30 dino oil, I am going to try 5W-20 next time and see if it's any worse because I make so many short trips. You're also "lucky" that you have FWD so no need to modify the transmission to make it work :) Good luck with the swap, and hope you get those nice low revs :D I would love to have the Corolla ratios in this thing, or at least just the 0.725 5th.
