2000 miles on electric!

Today, I was doing a little more work tinkering with my car, and I realized I just crossed 2000 miles on the vehicle since electric conversion.

While that’s still only two-thirds of a traditional gasoline oil change, it’s not a bad distance for not using a drop of gasoline. Another way of looking at it is that it is nearly the exact distance to drive from my house to Los Angeles, California.

When I hit 3000 miles, I’ll let you know that I still haven’t changed my oil.

lol.
Cheech to Chong when the car won;t start: "have you checked the air in the tires, man?"

I expect it to run for much much longer. It may run down after a few battery packs sometime in 2065, when hydrogen is an old fuel, and we moved to sxuleilists as a fuel source.

How many miles does the body have on it? (Or how many miles were on the engine before it was pulled?)

bennelson 04-11-2010 11:03 PM

I think it was around 140,000 miles on the body.

In my area, the roads are salted heavily in the winter to melt the snow. It's really hard on car bodies.

Originally, there was a problem with the front control arm mount. Metros are notorious for rusting out from the inside there. When I had the engine and transmission out, my friend Tim, (user DAOX on this forum) gave me a hand by welding it up from inside the hood!

I actually got some comments later by other Geo Metro folks saying what a good welding job it was!

There is some rust on the rocker panels. I'll have to take a look at those and see what can do about it. I have really enjoyed having my own electric car and would like to keep it on the road for as long as I can!

Between my father and myself we have almost 8000 miles on electric, not half bad!

Congrats, Ben!

Ha! Looked like someone squeezed crap out of a bird to me!

(Just kidding. Tim is slightly better at welding than I am)

Do you do any rust prevention? I have the ForkenSwift oil treated. (And have also done the rusty control arm mount reinforcement). Hope to get a few more years out of it :D

We're pretty close in mileage (though I have a head start). I'm at ~4k kilometers / 2485 mi.

I put over 1,000 on my commuti-car but it's down right now due to a bad wheel bearing, can't wait till I hit that 2,000 and 3,000 mile mark as well!

MY 05 miles already has rust on the unibody starting, I have started doing a vinegar wash, then zincing then painting with herculiner, trouble is I will have to take out the Carpet to do both sides of the floor pans.

Pain in the butt, too bad I can't find anything better than 5% vinegar.

That's great! I am nearing the 1500 mile marker on my EV and hope to pass it before I upgrade my pack for more range and abuse factor. (I have 1458 miles!)

TomEV 04-14-2010 11:17 PM

Congratulations Ben!

As of today I have put 3,874 miles on the Citicar - about 5 miles at a time...
