Prius C / Yaris Hybrid

The old Yaris 1,0 are close to 14 years, the catalytic converter is shot, and it is in need of some other repair and service.

So I'm thinking that I should get us a new car. As we live in Europe, the Yaris Hybrid (In US the Prius C) would be my first choice.....

As we drive mostly shorter trips, and a mix of land and city driving, the Yaris Hybrid seems the most economical car FE wise. And on spritmonitor.dk it tops the list of best FE for petrol cars.

Diesel is not for us, cause to many shorter trips (less than 15 miles), so a diesel would seldom get real warmed up.

Are there any experiences - good or bad - out there about the Prius C / Yaris Hybrid.

It has to be a Toyota, right?
Otherwise I'd say wait for the 2014 Honda Fit hybrid. It claims 86 mpg [edit: according to the optimistic Japanese testing cycle] even though its power and acceleration put current hybrids to shame. The Atkinson cycle engine and separate electric motor paired to a double clutch gearbox, allowing them to operate different gears at the same time makes for that. If I could only put all of that in my Insight
See this.

Unfortunately - I've nt got the time to wait for that. Car is up for approval/insepction in mid january at the latest, so I've got to deside before that.

Besides that - I've been driving Toyota's for 15 years now, and have never had any major problems with them. Very low cost to keep them running - I like that. No experiences with the Hondas though....

We probably would have bought a Prius C if there hadn't been a 2005 Prius in good shape for less than half the price sitting on the other side of the lot. The whole Prius family is very reliable. The only reason I wouldn't recommend one is if you'll leave it sitting for more than 2-3 weeks because the high voltage battery doesn't like that.
Head over to PriusChat if you want to read more about peoples' experiences with them.

See this.
That's a badass system from an engineering standpoint. Would absolutely love to play with that.

Where does it say 86 mpg? Not happening. Not even mpg imperial. The new Fit looks like a great car for someone that wants a little more than the PriusC but it won't quite match the FE of the little Prius.

and where does it say that it won't match the "C"

PS, that dual clutch tranny with electric motor kinda blew my mind. A clever bit of engineering that.

I stand corrected.
I had to look it up and indeed, Road&Track says it only gets 85.6 USmpg, not 86.
And that's not EPA too - it is the Japanese standardized method of testing. Honda warns that in ordinary use it will do about 15% worse, say 70 to 75 mpg.
I'd bear that with love.

The Fit is already on sale in Japan, but demand there is 4 times higher than production capacity. It will be a while before we can lay our hands on it.
Toyota has announced drastically improved economy with their future models too. btw.

For what is avaliable here and now, best economy for a new plugless 4 seater is indeed the Toyota Yaris/Prius C Hybrid.

Nope.

Seat Mii / Skoda CitiGo on CNG

Better price.
Cheaper fuel.
Biogas / Greengas option, i.e. bio waste turned into fuel.

Can't be beaten for the moment.

I haven't read a ton on the Prius C, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy another used 2nd gen Prius (or 3rd gen). If you're looking to save a bit more $ that might be the way to go. If you want new, go with what you want.
