Why is the speedometer in the middle?! I always figured that if I bought a car like this I would mount an android tablet where the cluster is supposed to be and run Torque on it.

I was a little concerned when I saw Miami! Then I looked at the pictures and the Offer Up map and I see it is not that far from you. Toyota makes some good vehicles, I don’t know about this model. The plus is it is give me a ticket red and looks nice.

Yes, I had planned on mentioning that Miami was a little further than I wanted to go to look at a car.

Do all Toyotas have vertical oil filters? It took me a while to find the one in Mom's Camry, but I was looking in the back of the engine. However, I have not figured out how to remove it without getting oil all over.

Do I punch a hole in it? :)

Have I mentioned that I am 6'2"? :) I am a little concerned about fitting in it, although the Fit that I drove was fine.

Never seen a 2-door one of this generation, but once in a while I see some JDM 4-door ones with Paraguayan plates.

Cheap cars have the instrument cluster in the middle of the dash because it is cheaper than making one dash for RHD and one for LHD.

Almost every car I've owned has the oil filter under the engine in a vertical position. You either just spin if off and let the oil fall into your catch pan or you can poke a hole in the bottom to let it drain. I poke one in the bottom and one near the top so air can get in and it drains better. Then I drive a screwdriver through the filter horizontally near the bottom and use it to break the oil filter free.

I'm surprised to find that $2,200 is near the bottom of the KBB private party pricing.

I guess the question is, do you want 3 cars with 200K miles?

The first time that I saw a car with a central instrument cluster I wondered if they used the same dash worldwide, but decided for some reason that it was asymmetrical.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't, but I am sure the dash is the cheap part here. Even if they used different dashes for left-and right-hand-drive, and I am not saying they are, they would still save money by having it in the same place.

I just haven't seen another manufacturer to do that.

When I look for cars I either want to fix and sell them or replace one of my current cars. It is eight years newer than my Civic, but has the same mileage. Is there enough reason to replace a Honda with a Toyota? Newer sounds nice, even with the same mileage, but it is actually smaller, and I am sure that repairs are a little more complicated.

As I expected, it has the plastic engine cover and ignition coils, four bolts to remove the cover and four bolts to remove the ignition coils. Unplug the coils and remove the spark plugs.

Will it require fewer repairs because it is eight years newer or a Toyota? I don't know. What really appeals to me is having a dealership in-town. When my alternator bolt broke I drove down to the valley, picked up the bolt from a dealership, and drove back. Seven hours for one $10 bolt just so that I did not wait a week. Another time I waited the week and paid $10 to ship a part that cost less than that. Then there were the times that I needed a part for my Civic as part of a larger repair--the head gasket or heater core--and waiting for the part delayed the whole thing.

Just as long as I can grab some free cookies when I pick up parts. :)

Of course, I know where to save with Honda parts. I would need to start over.

My Civic is rated 30/39 and I averaged 44. I was shamed into testing the compression because everyone said that I should be getting 60 and users have gotten that much without lean burn. I do not have any idea if replacing the head gasket improved compression. I should check after I replace the heater core.

The Yaris is rated 29/36 and FuelEconomy.gov says that it would cost an extra 1¢ to drive every five miles. I think that I have driven Chorizo 52,000 miles.

I always miss fuel logs.

By that math it would have cost me an extra $104 to fuel a Yaris, but I wouldn't have needed to replace the timing belt.

Based on user data, the Yaris gets 1.5% worse fuel economy, although they averaged my 44.6 in my Civic with the 36 - 41.4 of 7 other users. I do not have any idea who logged 24.9 in a Yaris, but 18 users reported 40 - 50.2 MPG.

I do not know how the Yaris compares with my Civic currently, but having a timing chain and a dealership in-town are important to me.

Yeti_Herd logged 47.82 in a 2007. I'mHurdlingThroughSpace! logged 54 and MRK reported 50.85 in 2009s and Berto88 logged 45.98 in a 2010.

There is definitely good potential for that, but how much money would I lose replacing the Civic? Maybe I talk the owner down to $2,000 and sell the Honda for $1,000?

Someone just posted a Focus ZX3 hatchback in Show Low on OfferUp. They are asking $1,550 and claim that it only has 121,000 miles. They say that it is the Kona edition and was kept in a garage, but the first picture shows some creases they say they picked up in a parking lot.

Wikipedia indicates the Kona was only available in 2000. Somehow I am more comfortable with a car the same year, but with 100,000 miles fewer, although I am less comfortable with Ford, but there is a dealership less than a mile from the house.

The manual was only rated 28/32, though.

I just happened to see that while checking prices of Civics. Of course I was unable to visit OfferUp without seeing an obvious scam.

Surprisingly, the Toyota Vios specifically oriented to third-world markets and some derivatives which are rebadged as Yaris in countries such as mine have the cluster in front of the driver either in LHD or RHD configurations, while the Euro and Jap "real" Yaris had it in the middle of the dash.

Toyota got rid of the center mounted instrument cluster in 2013 for the US market.

Can I retrofit a 2013 dash into a 2008? :D

You can retrofit your foot on the gas pedal and keep driving :D
Honestly, you get used to that center-cluster in no time.

My friend's cousin drove us somewhere in her Yaris way back when I had friends. I asked her about the instrument cluster and she said "I like it! I end up speeding, though."

I still think that mounting an Android tablet and installing Torque is the way to go.

The loan is at 3.75%. I believe the cool kids say that I cannot afford not to buy things that I do not need with it. Then I claim it as a tax deduction!

The federal tax is 22% for me, so if I pay $5,800 it would really only cost me $4,524, which is practically free!

Yeah, I am totally going to do something else with that money.

I reached out to a bank or credit union to create an account that gets 4 or 4.09%, but you cannot apply on-line, you are supposed to have them call you.

Huh. I wonder if that was one of the calls that I missed. I should figure out who that was and follow up!

Guys. Guys! Do I need an Accord with more miles, fewer doors, less headroom, and a bad transmission? :D

$750 definitely sounds high for a high-mileage car with a bad transmission.

Haven't seen a 2-door Accord of that generation for a while. On a sidenote, even though it may take longer to sell everything which could still worth something, wouldn't it return a higher profit if you part it out?

My 2005 and 2009 were the most reliable cars I've owned. The only thing they needed besides routine maintenance was the 3-way valve for the coolant thermos which doesn't actually have to be fixed. The 2005 was sold at 147K miles / 13 years old and the 2009 at 115K miles / 10 years old.

My parents have a 2010 with 185,000 miles that has only had routine maintenance. (No 3-way valve in the 3rd gen)

The 3rd gen (2010 - 2015) drives better and gets a little bit better fuel economy. The 2nd gen (2004-2009) are a couple grand cheaper.

If I were going for a Prius, probably I'd still rather get either a 3rd-gen or a Prius c just to avoid having to deal with the chain at the power-split device.
