2011 Ford Mustang 305 hp V6 automatic: 48.5 MPG over 777 mi @ 44 mph

From: 2011 Ford Mustang V6 achieves record 48.5 MPG via ABG

Title says it all.

Quote:

In order to achieve the best possible fuel economy, the V6 Mustang traveled at an average speed of 43.9 mph, including driver changes, and covered a total of 1,457 laps at Bristol Speedway. In total, 776.5 miles were traveled, resulting in an average fuel economy of 48.5 mpg – a new record for Bristol Speedway – and not too shabby for a 305 horsepower sports coupe.
Just makes me wish automakers would publish this kind of info for new vehicles: "max range/mpg" (ie. just after top gear engages), also mpg at a range of constant cruising speeds.

That's not bad for a Mustang.

brucey 06-24-2010 07:31 PM

In an automatic too!

Mustang Dave 06-24-2010 11:48 PM

I bet I could get 35 MPG out of the manual version commuting to work. :)

MetroMPG 06-25-2010 08:57 AM

Just for comparison, looks like the 505 hp Corvette Z06 can return about 36 mpg (US) at the same speed they drove the Mustang...

I haven't checked, but I wouldn't be surprised if the automatic has taller gearing than the manual for the same car. Seems to be the way more and more automatics are going.

Better trader 'er in. The cyclone wipes the floor with the ancient cologne!

MadisonMPG 06-25-2010 02:10 PM

MMmmmhhh

I'm starting to like Ford more and more.

SVOboy 06-25-2010 02:43 PM

Ah, the old oval track record. I wonder if they use P&G

MetroMPG 06-25-2010 08:57 PM

No P&G according to the reports I saw.

They just got it into top gear and held it there, minimized use of A/C (but used some).

That is a VERY tempting suggestion! 45% more HP from 7.5% less displacement and 16% better (EPA estimated) fuel economy. All it takes is money. I'd never break even on FE, but 305 HP.... :D

bhazard 06-26-2010 11:41 AM

Yup, and even an extra gear!

Go for it!

Mustang Dave 06-26-2010 10:57 PM

Engine (305 HP vs. 210 HP), transmission (6-speed vs. 5-speed), rear axle (2.73:1 vs. 3.31:1 ; limited slip vs. open differential) upgrade.... Probably be about the same price to trade-up for "White Pony II".:) I'm definitely considering trading up. Or I may wait for the '14 model and get the 50th Anniversary edition... Uhh, why wait? It's only money! :)

Off topic, I paid $750 for a ride in a REAL Mustang today. A WWII P51 Mustang fighter plane. What a ride! We only got about 2 MPG, but... :D

Nevyn 06-27-2010 08:30 AM

It's not a "Slush-Box Automatic" this time around. It's the funky dual-clutch manual transmission Ford calls the "PowerShift" 6 speed auto. No torque converter, no ATF - it's a manual transmission that is electronically "clutched" so there's no 3rd pedal for the driver.

Call it what you will, but it's NOT a conventional automatic.

redline5th 06-27-2010 01:27 PM

I was sad that they tested the V6 and not the 5.0...

The 5.0 is an amazing machine. :D

I assume you mean the top ratio and not Jeremy Clarkson's TV show (new series started this evening, quite well I thought) - I suspect he wouldn't be seen dead in a Mustang.

texanidiot25 06-27-2010 07:20 PM

I'm not wildly impressed by this. A lot of cars can do great fuel economy on a race-prepped track with no real turns (big sweeping corners, not a big hurtle to hold speed), and a slow enough speeds where aerodynamics don't yet play a huge factor. It's a nice marketing stunt, however.

I could get 30mpg in our '98 GMC Jimmy at about 35 mph-40 mph. 4.3L V6 with the 4L60E and all.

No, that was at the Warbird Fly-In at the Valle Air Museum. My Mustang will never feel the same after that ride in a REAL Mustang.

Oooh, thanks! Downloading as I type. :)

Quite right - if they'd been in "Top Gear" mode, they would have seen single digit MPG, at least right up until the impact with the caravan (or something).

Enjoy that. The CRDi version of the sensibly priced car is on my test list once I get back from my hols...

It matches the Honda CR-Z in most things (except looks maybe) and is 7K cheaper...

Fresh back in from a test drive in a nice black one. I'm favorably impressed! But it won't replace the Sport Coupe...

meekin 06-29-2010 09:16 PM

It's good to see an American car MFG directing their company in the right direction.

If it weren't for the internet I'd have never seen or heard of Top Gear; best car show ever produced.

Now I think I've seen all 14 seasons and the past 3 episodes!

Arragonis 07-17-2010 06:05 AM

I've been a fan since William Woollard did the first series in the 70s and before it became the Jeremy Clarkson show.
