2016 Fiesta ST
Hi everyone! I just got my first new car a 2016 Ford Fiesta ST. Although its built for speedy performance I am interested in getting the most fuel efficiency possible out of it. The car shows your real time and average mpg and I have been fixated on increasing these numbers.
The official ratings for the car are 26/33 and 29 combined. When pulling off the dealer lot the average mpg was 21 and after a few hundred miles it is now 25.8. My first goal is to get this number to 30, and ultimately I would like to achieve the maximum fuel efficiency possible for my car. See you all around! |
Welcome, nice car!

Welcome to the site.
The Fiesta ST sounds like a very fun car, and it has a pretty decent highway rating. I'm curious though, the 2014 and 2015 EPA ratings are a bit higher than the 2016 rating. If I were you, I'd try to figure out what the difference is. http://ecomodder.com/forum/attachmen...1&d=1453043195 What is your normal commute like? We can suggest some mods based off of that. Or, did you have some planned already? |
Great point about the 2016 having lower milage, I will look into that. My main commute to work is about 40 highway miles round trip.
I don't have any mods planned yet because I'm new to this type of performance so I'm open to suggestion. |
Averaged over 46 in my 2011 1.6 AT Fiesta. Yours should be good for 40 average unless you start driving at much slower average speeds (probably not).
I would not do engine off with that engine and direct injection. I did not do EOC in mine due to the auto. regards mech |
Nice ride. That was my "but what I reeealy want..." when I was looking. The leftover 13 Honda was too good to pass up, though. I probably would have had more fun in the Ford, but not by much.
Welcome to the fun! |
Welcome to the site!
Daox, the highway mileage dropped 2 MPG, but the big "29 MPG combined" is a bit confusing, especially when the city mileage did not improve. |
Yeah, I noticed that. Could be a typo. I'm not sure. Its worth investigating.
|
The only information I have found regarding the highway mpg revision for the 2016 model is some drivers speculating that the previous highway rating of 35 was overrated and the new rating of 33 more accurately reflects what drivers are getting. I don't think there are any mechanical changes in the car that made the highway mileage mileage worse.
|
It's sad that EPA test results are too aspirational.
|
I admire your discipline, fist16. While the Fiesta ST and Focus ST are up there on my list of realistic dream cars, partially for the mileage, I know that I wouldn't be able to keep my foot out of the go pedal enough to reach those numbers.
|
Welcome! It's nice to have your cake and eat it too.
|
That's why for my Subaru I set the UltraGauge to sound an alarm at 4000 rpm.
I heard it. Oops.:D |
Its not easy keeping off the go pedal in this thing! Other than that, I think the extra power allows the engine to not have to work as hard which should help its mileage. With the driving techniques I've learned from this board applied constantly I think its possible to hit 40 but 35 is my next goal. Thanks for the warm welcome all!

In my WRX Sti, while doing Pulse and Glide....I can usually get higher MPG if i boost up the speed then glide.
The boost allows me to get up to speed a lot faster, thus it allows me to glide even longer. In other words: BOOST / gliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide... VS. NON BOOST ACCELERATION / gliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide. **Note that i do BOOST/GLIDE for pulse and glide only. I was hesitant to Engine off Coast while doing BOOST/GLIDE because I was afraid of prematurely ruining the turbo by constantly-boosting-then-engine-off over and over again. ** |
I noticed the same thing! I can boost up to speed quick and therefor spend more time gliding than I would with no turbo, also less effort going up hills. The biggest issue is self discipline. Driven correctly I think this car is a hypermiler sleeper. Its just a matter of focusing on mpg performance instead of speed performance.
|
As part of a pulse, yes. Maintaining a higher speed that calls for staying in the turbo, not so much.
What I really wanted back in my Subaru was a top gear that would let me putt at 70 without the turbo. That would have been sweet. |
Belated welcome, fist16.
Fun car. I'm curious what came first, the interest in MPG or this particular car? |

I think what sparked my interest was the real time and average MPG display. The moment I saw those numbers I wanted to focus on making them go up and when thinking about how to do that I remembered this site. |
Did you try the 1.0t Fiesta out of curiosity? I'd love to.
|
I did not, I was mostly sold on the fiesta ST before I even got to the dealership. I did drive the focus ST though which was very powerful.
