210HP Honda Civic ,HWY commuter
Hi,
Came across this site from a Honda forum. I commute to work 140kms a day (about 100miles?) Saw the grill block DIY. and wondered about other aero mods for the all mighty +MPG. Since i drive stupid distances to get a paycheck. The returns would be huge. I have a 2001 4dr 2600lb Honda Civic with a Acura RSX 6Spd /Engine Swap. I get approx 550kms for 12Gallon Tank. 91 Octane So its not too bad. xxxxxxxxx Last sentence deleted for not realising there's HP Freaks here too :> http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/5/...7/IMG_690j.jpghttp://www.fileden.com/files/2007/5/...7/IMG_6902.jpghttp://www.fileden.com/files/2007/5/...35800_9527.jpg |
The car looks good, and you gotta love the k20, what's the gearing like on the six speed?
Welcome to ecomodder! I doubt you'll find any hate here. |

Thanks. gotta love the Vtec when it kicks in. Thats what i love about it, a regular economical honda engine down low in the rev range... +5800rpm-8200rpm its a beast. Gear Ratio is 4.388 Revs about 3400 Rpm @ 120kms/hr |
Yeah, theres other performance minded cars here, like mine. The difference is your car was actually meant for economy as well.

Wow, that ratio isn't very FE friendly. There aren't any alternate 6th gears out there, are there? |

ya i know.. i dont think there is a alt. 6th gear. it would be too much labor for me anyways. |
I dont think a higher gear would be good for that car anyway, that engine thrives on higher rpms. You dont wanna get it too low to where it cant keep the car moving.
|
I think the car would easily stay moving at 2k at 140 kmh versus 3400, :p
|
140kph is almost 90mph. I dont think even big diesels turn as low as 2000 rpm at 90mph. Also think about what rpms it would be turning at 55mph if it did 2000 rpm at close to 90.
What speed to you travel at most frequently? |
65 mph, at 1800 rpm, with a 62 HP engine running with a CEL, does fine, :p
He's got a six speed, anyway, he wouldn't need to run the 6th gear all the time. The new corvette has a ridic long 6th gear with this in mind, after all. |
But I guess I should note that I do think it's prolly fine, I wasn't thinking much about what that speed actually was, :p
Slow down! And get a shorter commute, :) |
Its hard to slow down when ya got hoysepowa!
|
well i have 2options for my commute.
1. Major Freeway, @ 120km/hr ,68.1 km or 2. 1 lane hwy @ 80-100km/hr , 59.6 km both take the same amount of time |

I love low end torque! 2k RPM's at 70mph (about 113km/h) and all the torque is 3k and under! With stock gearing!!! also, You feel guilty after putting this on your whip! http://forum.ecomodder.com/emgarage-...5a3a5e30dc.jpg |
First of all, I like what you did to your car. The Si rims flow with the car IMO. Did your original engine krap out on you or just an upgrade for horsepower? If a front license plate isn't required in your state, then I would take it off. Also what about the civic hybrid lip, it looks nice and would probably help in aerodynamics which is what you need since you are driving highway miles. Also a freer flowing exhaust might help out. What's your current fuel economy?
Hybrid lip: http://www.hondadealerwebsites.com/e...ercivic4dr.jpg Can anybody here confirm that it would help in aero? |
Yes. that lip is for aerodynamics. I think I read somewhere that it reduces the .cd by about .01.
Especially with an engine that big, keeping the rpm low is best for mileage. Hard to do with the gearing, though. Try Pulse & Glide. It works for me, even on the highway. Also, for highway driving, smoothing over the upper grille will help your aerodynamics more then closing the lower one. Ideally, it would be smooth and flush. Not much air goes in there, anyway. Most of the cooling air goes in the lower opening. |
