Old news and they still havent edited the performance errors. GGRRR 0-60 in 11.9 seconds NOT 32 seconds

VW's own words on it here

Holy crap that thing is beautiful! It looks more like a supercar than a high-MPG vehicle.
What percentage of the car is made from coroplast?
:P

I'd be tempted to buy one.
Chances of them being under $30k seem slim though.

The concept vehicle, the one that Ferdinand Piech drove I've known about since it came out. This one is new ( too me ) and very cool.

Hello -

1750 lbs + 74 "total" HP :

Look closely and you’ll notice the XL1’s narrow rear track, especially how the wheels sit inward of the body. Expect the production model to feature full wheel covers, to help clean up the aerodynamics. A curb weight of 1,749 lbs. has been made possible by the use of lightweight materials, most likely copious amounts aluminum and carbon fiber. Only 23.2-percent of the XL1 will be made out of steel or iron.

Like the previous L1 concept, the XL1 will be powered by a 2-cylinder turbo-diesel. This 800 cc engine delivers 47-bhp and 89 lb.-ft. of torque. The XL1 will be rear-wheel-drive, and come equipped with VW’s 7-speed DSG transmission. Adding the extra kick to the diesel engine is a 27-bhp electric motor, which can operate with the diesel or drive the car independently for short distances. There is no official word on the XL1’s electric-only driving range, or if electric mode will be limited to low speeds.

My Dad's VW Karmann Ghia was 1800 lbs + 62 HP, so it's a wee better than the Ghia.

Makes you want to put a Kubota minidiesel in a Karmann Ghia and call it a day.

I'll repost this here. Quoting myself.

1 litre per 100 kilometers = 235 mpg. But this is a PLUG IN hybrid with a 5kwh battery. Thats 60 miles on electric charge alone if it were the VLCE. Moreover it's designed so it uses all that range, (unless it goes above 60mph or the battery is depleted to 20%) before the diesel kicks in. Anyone can just throw batteries at the problem. You can have a plug in hybrid Hummer with a 500kwh battery range of 300miles but gets 9 mpg on gas, call it 309mpg and say its the most efficient car ever. The VW Xl1 maybe the most efficient car currently coming to production, but it does NOT get 1 Litre per 100 Kilometers. It's gonna take alot more to break that barrier.

I'd buy one new. What an interesting concept. Two cylinder diesel would be extremely low friction. I drove a Mercedes 300TD with a 0-60 time of over 20 seconds so a 30 second 0-60 time would be do-able. Hopefully the rear wheel wells are completely enclosed. I love being insulated from fuel prices...

Also in Road & Track's first drive of the prototype, they quote VW's estimate of 11.9 seconds to 100kmh/62mph
