25 mpg UNMODIFIED!!!
My 1991 F-250 with I-6 gets 25 mpg AVERAGE. This is an average over 430 miles with 4 cold starts, city, highway, and HILLS. We made MANY stops and had a piano in the truck for 180 of those miles. Cruising speed was held at 50 mph. Tires were set at 50 lbs. This truck has NO mods. 30 mpg should be easy.

awesome good job man
The trucks All stock? |
all stock. come to think of it i did have the mirrors folded part of the trip. But other than that it was bone stock.

Pump up the tires - 50 PSI does not cut it for those behemoths - I think 80 PSI or so is routine, and will help roll smoothly without much of a resistance. But do think of what you are hauling, while you pump up the tires. Will help much.

I normally carry 2,500-5,000 lbs. I am running load range C tires because that is what came on it. The tires on the truck are not new. I was told a while back that the steel belts in new tires are not all exactly the same length and need to be driven a while to even out tension before loading the tire to full capacity. |
Issac, I'm sorry. I was sure smoking something funny while I typed the quoted part. I myself can't make head or tails out of it now. Scratch it. But do pump up your tires for better coasting. Wait... That is an automatic, isn't it? then scratch even the coasting :(

It's a manual...LOL I should do some coasting. We have enough hills around here. You have hills EVERYWHERE around here. I have to go over at least a few hills just to get out of Colfax!!!! They are not little hills. The ride is already rough and unbearable so I will go ahead and pump them up some more...it cant get any worse. |
Congratulations on the FE
Actually, I'm a little jealous of you having a manual, I think that would help my mileage if mine was a stick versus a slushbox. Keep trying for that 30 mpg tank!

I would check the tires for ratings. If you go to 80 psi on a rubber valve stem you will shoot it out on the road. A load range c tire doesn't seem adequate for that vehicle. I just double checked it and it should be on E's for the size of that vehicle with metal valve stems and 55-80 psi.

I am going to put my e range tires on it in the near future. I will also pick up some metal valve stems. The previous owner used it for hauling hay and used whatever tires he could get. I have been EOCing the snot out of the truck and it works nicely. Turn off key, put in neutral. To start: Turn key on and put in high gear and nudge the clutch. Works like a charm. I want to mount a kill switch on the stick so I can cet out a couple of steps. I have been hauling lumber for Wayne this week so The numbers may be down a little but that will give me a good average for what the truck does. I filled it to the top of the tank today and will see what this tank returns.
