2nd (and 3rd?) rearview mirror

I know everything automotive has been done before, but I haven't seen this one done.

Just glue an extra rearview mirror on your windshield. :p If your car permits, glue it on your left side.

For you guys that are doing driver's side mirrors on the inside, you could make a bracket and mount a rearview mirror sideways (tall & skinny). F-14 Tomcats used 3 interior mirrors. I don't see why it wouldn't work on a car.;)

Thats actually a pretty good idea, considering you could go to a junk yard and likely pick up a couple for next to nothing. Plus the do not distort as bad and if you do not have side curtain airbags could just as easily be mounted to the A-pillars.

Kudos on the idea ...

Yeah, like $10 bucks at a junkyard. Most look brand new. You can get the glue-on kind or screw-on kind. The screw-on kinds would be the easiest to mount to a bracket.

Now that I think about it...you might find one with a compass and temp display if you're lucky. ;)

how about those racing mirors

the ones that go all the way across, I know they will more expensive but you will see everything behind you

wink mirror

Like everything else, racers have already done it. You're right about using a wink-style mirror (which is 4-5 mirrors at slightly different angles) but a stock rearview mirror has a built-in dimming ability. An auto-dimming rearview mirror would be the best.

A rearview mirror mounted on the left can be aimed and mounted any way you want (vertically?). A wink mirror gives you a great view, but not from the left-hand side. Why not both!? :D

Another exotic option would be to have a periscope mirror like the Isdera Imperator or Isdera Commendatore. I'd like to see a car with a periscope mirror on a hinge that also acts as a vent. (Kill two birds with one stone, etc.)

Let's see...what else do I know about mirrors? You can buy a carbon fiber dash mounted mirror from places that sell racecar parts. Carbon is always cool. Or instead of going old school with a dash mounted mirror, you could go JDM and do some wing mounts on your front fenders. Those might not be very "aero" though, lol.

Since some of you guys on this forum don't hold back on the aero mods AT ALL, the ultimate setup would be to mount the driver's seat on the centerline of the car and use multiple interior rearview mirrors. A center driving position is superior for just about everything. It is safer in any kind of collision. Visibility is superior since you don't have an A-post in your blind spot. A car designed around a centered driver's seat doesn't have to have such a rectangular greenhouse. Rectangles aren't very aero.

Good point about the center driving position. I think the ultra-slippery Daihatsu UFE concept cars were designed that way.

In some states, it is illegal to have anything mounted to the windshield.
( As you probably know )

You have seen Basjoos inside mirror setup right ?

aspera 10-31-2008 06:04 PM

He's got a few of those little 'autobahn' mirrors, right?

The UFE pics I found were RHD, not center seat.

MetroMPG 10-31-2008 06:24 PM

I guess it was only the UFE-III . Have a look on this page:

That one looks great.

That UFE looks about ideal. It looks like the VW 1L, but with more useable passenger seating. 1+2 instead of 1+1.

It looks a little short, though. Wouldn't a longer body be better for such a specialized car?
