3 wheel Honda Insight boat tailed EV: Another mystery solved!

It's an Electric Honda Insight with a Lithium pack and 100 mile range! Thats better than bringing back the the EV1. I don't believe there was a dedicated thread to this car. Pulled this from Insight Central.

cool

Oh ya! I've seen that car each year at the Bay Area Makers Faire (where the video was obviously taken). Another great reason to go; you meet some fascinating and inventive folks there. A couple of my pix of the car:

I like that the trailer he brings along can be used to help charge the batteries.

That is a BMW Paralever single sided swingarm suspension.

At one point this is what I was going to do with an insight except use my Goldwing rear swingarm. I wonder how much weight he was able to reduce?

Just a curiosity question, wouldn't it be more efficient to have power sent to one wheel, rather than the front wheels?

Maybe, but how much weight would be on that wheel?

alohaspirit 07-06-2013 12:44 AM

interesting

could use a cover to prevent the rear tire from kicking water/dirt up inside the end of the boattail

So radical!! Mad inspiration

Not that much, given its position pretty far aft, while the weight reduction on the rear end of the Insight (with the glassfiber rear at least) means the CoG has likely shifted forward.

With that one, I'd rather worry about structural integrity and re-ingesting exhaust gasses.

Since it's EV only, ingesting the exhaust gasses is one thing he won't have to worry about

That's a beautiful creation for sure, aerodynamically.
I'd love to see a drag study on this car.

I'm a but curious about the weight distribution. I clicked on the first video link, and from that, it would appear that all of the weight is up front.

Where can we find out more info on this one ? I searched "Karmin Projects Insight" in Google and came up with nothing.

NeilBlanchard 07-06-2013 10:32 AM

The underside of the tail does need to be closed in to be better aerodynamically. Having it wide open means it could be parachuting.

Xist 02-05-2014 12:16 AM

Randomly remembered this while attempting to study--studying is going that well!

What would it take to do this while leaving it a gas hybrid?

Build a cage for the rear end and do the bottom, with a seal all around, to keep out the exhaust, and probably replace the gas tank. What else?

NeilBlanchard 02-06-2014 12:06 PM

To slightly correct the OP, the EV1 had more than 100 miles range; with the second generation batteries.

is it me or the taper of the tumble home could have been more aggressive (it looks like there is a bit of reflux camber.

Unless the car in front of him is a diesel
