35.8 MPG in 1999 Camry LE 2.2 4 banger
 

On my trip back from Bakersfield my Camry got 35.8 MPG. If it had not been for one bathroom break I think I would have come closer to 36 or even 37. While there were some steap climbs along the I-5 on the way home, there were some really sweet dissents that I costed down and really helped my MPG. I found on flatter ground that I could get 40 MPG if kept speed at just around 62 MPH. Using my ultraguage I kept track of gph which was at just about 1.70, this was my sweet spot.

The only mods I'm currently rocking are a volo FS3 Chip

Some lucas fuel cleaner

This was with 3 people in the car so thats another 300 pounds plus some luggage.

I never did any off engine coasting because from what I've read its not good for automatic engine.

This was my best MPG yet so glad I finally broke though the 30 MPG, heck I blew though it.

Any advice or other camry owners who have had similar success?

But I think you might want to double-check your "sweet spot" calcs.

I bet you'll find the best mileage is just after the torque converter locks in top gear, which is probably closer to 45-50 mph.

I should have clarified what my sweet spot meant haha. At 62 ish MPH my brother and sister were not riding me about driving like a semi truck. While I'm sure your right about 45 to 50 being the sweet spot, 40 MPG at 62 was a nice compromise for speed and gas mileage. As my car is an automatic, I'm having trouble finding the spot you are talking about. I feel like as I get to 45 or 50 i'm seeing low 20s, but then after I get to 55 or 60 I see high 30s or even 40s. I'll keep experimenting and see what I find.

Anybody have any other ideas that will help me max out with an automatic tran, any advice would be great.

that is fantastic! I have a 98, and I have never bested 33 on a tank full. It is a bit worn out and has a hard time getting to 30 these days.

I have a 99 4cyl auto and recently took a 450 mile trip and averaged 34.8 mpg that was driving between 55 and 60 one other passenger and using a/c off and on. I hope to squeeze 40 mpg one day with a few mods!

I do notice that steady speed does help and with a heavy load the speed of your vehicle does matter. If I were driving with extra weight my car would have to struggle to maintain 60mph, I notice this when I did a test run from New Orleans to Austin. On my way home to New Orleans I was not really gunning it but going 80mph with a light foot and got amazingly 450 miles and it ate less than half a tank of gas. Not to mention being able to be in lean burn mode as well.
