Station wagon-based ambulances

I've spotted this late-90s to early-00s Volkswagen Quantum last month in my neighborhood, and had the urge to take the pictures...

I know it may sound kinda odd nowadays, since their internal space is not really so great, but station wagon-based ambulances don't seem really so bad. Lighter, with a smoothier ride than a van-based or truck-based one, they can still be found in some countries.

Our ambulances transport people with medical problems and cando a lot regarding medical problems short of surgery. My father had a heart attack a few years ago and they came. They sat for 45 minutes. I asked the driver what was wrong. They said they were treating him and radioing medical info to and from the hospital and was better for them to stay put to stabilize him for transport as they were actively treating him.

That's why van-based ambulances are nowadays prevalent, due to their higher internal volume improving the working conditions for the medical crew. Even in the narrower Euro models.

Well, if we remember that in Europe many vans are available in FWD configuration, the lower cargo platform height is also more favorable to the operational conditions of an ambulance...
