long time V8 owner (currently have 3)
just picked up my new commuter (first hybrid) a 2001 Prius :turtle:
it's got 205K miles, newly rebuilt battery
runs and drives well (feels like an economy car)
she's currently getting 40-42mpg

I am moving this weekend, picking up a 60 mile each way commute (30,000 miles per year)
just trying to save a little money and wear and tear on my nicer vehicles.

current cars
2005 GTO, getting 18 avg / 24 highway
2001 Tahoe, getting 14 avg / 17 highway
and a 94 Turbo Diesel F-350 guessing about 18 mpg highway

any info on the 1st gen Prius would be appreciated

Russ

Congrats on the new car. It wil save you a ton of $ - good luck, and enjoy.

I was looking at some old Civic's and Corolla's
at 30mpg, and nearly $4/gal for fuel
my new commute of 60 miles each way
the Prius will save me about $1500 / year

Welcome!

Sequim to Bremerton? That's a bit of a drive... at least you have some decent scenery to look at.

I have a modest commute and discovered, switching from my Forester to a Civic Hybrid, that the hybrid just about pays for itself in avoided fuel expenses.

It's not saving me enough to offset its insurance cost too, but that's probably hoping for too much. You, however, might actually get there.

Start a Garage page on your Prius. Read the 65+ tips for saving fuel, adjust the nut behind the wheel, etc.

In 1990 I used to commute Tacoma to Bremerton everyday in a 71 Plymouth Sebring. It actually got 20 or better with highway gears but man... Those rainy days were harry. I'd start dragging the brakes a mile to Gorst as the backup would jump out some days and soggy drums are really soft.
I did run that car for fun at Bremerton's raceway but it was only good for mid 16's with a stock but fresh 318 2bbl. Then drove it all the way to San Fran and averaged 22 on the trip not even trying to save gas.
In 1990 that seemed pretty good but double that and all the comforts of a modern Prius would be much better!

Yay! Forester to Civic! :D For me, though, I park the Civic and my girlfriend drives the Forester to see me.

Good luck with the hybrid, KrautBurner!

but I'm moving to Sequim this Saturday

it's just about an hour Door to Door
really not too bad,
I did 5 years commuting from East Bremerton to Downtown seattle (mostly motorcycle)

Mine are authentic Moon discs that you can buy from: www.mooneyesusa.com

Search around, there are a bunch of threads for cheaper alternatives (like pizza pans) and other Prius specific mods.

I'm also a "V8 owner", down to just three now.

Any plans for aero mods to the Prius, KrautBurner? Sounds like wheel discs maybe?

With that many miles/day on the open road, it's worth investigating.
