just picked up my new commuter (first hybrid) a 2001 Prius :turtle:
it's got 205K miles, newly rebuilt battery
runs and drives well (feels like an economy car)
she's currently getting 40-42mpg

I am moving this weekend, picking up a 60 mile each way commute (30,000 miles per year)
just trying to save a little money and wear and tear on my nicer vehicles.

current cars
2005 GTO, getting 18 avg / 24 highway
2001 Tahoe, getting 14 avg / 17 highway
and a 94 Turbo Diesel F-350 guessing about 18 mpg highway

any info on the 1st gen Prius would be appreciated

Congrats on the new car. It wil save you a ton of $ - good luck, and enjoy.

KrautBurner 03-12-2014 04:40 PM

I was looking at some old Civic's and Corolla's
at 30mpg, and nearly $4/gal for fuel
my new commute of 60 miles each way
the Prius will save me about $1500 / year

Welcome!

Sequim to Bremerton? That's a bit of a drive... at least you have some decent scenery to look at.

elhigh 03-12-2014 07:14 PM

I have a modest commute and discovered, switching from my Forester to a Civic Hybrid, that the hybrid just about pays for itself in avoided fuel expenses.

It's not saving me enough to offset its insurance cost too, but that's probably hoping for too much. You, however, might actually get there.

Start a Garage page on your Prius. Read the 65+ tips for saving fuel, adjust the nut behind the wheel, etc.

Hersbird 03-13-2014 12:24 AM

In 1990 I used to commute Tacoma to Bremerton everyday in a 71 Plymouth Sebring. It actually got 20 or better with highway gears but man... Those rainy days were harry. I'd start dragging the brakes a mile to Gorst as the backup would jump out some days and soggy drums are really soft.
I did run that car for fun at Bremerton's raceway but it was only good for mid 16's with a stock but fresh 318 2bbl. Then drove it all the way to San Fran and averaged 22 on the trip not even trying to save gas.
In 1990 that seemed pretty good but double that and all the comforts of a modern Prius would be much better!

Yay! Forester to Civic! :D For me, though, I park the Civic and my girlfriend drives the Forester to see me.

Good luck with the hybrid, KrautBurner!

yup,
I live in Bremerton, work in Silverdale
but I'm moving to Sequim this Saturday

it's just about an hour Door to Door
really not too bad,
I did 5 years commuting from East Bremerton to Downtown seattle (mostly motorcycle)

btw,
I love your wheel covers,

http://http://ecomodder.com/forum/av...ine=1357329471
where can I get some?

Mine are authentic Moon discs that you can buy from: www.mooneyesusa.com

Search around, there are a bunch of threads for cheaper alternatives (like pizza pans) and other Prius specific mods.

I'm also a "V8 owner", down to just three now.

MetroMPG 03-17-2014 08:50 PM

Any plans for aero mods to the Prius, KrautBurner? Sounds like wheel discs maybe?

With that many miles/day on the open road, it's worth investigating.

I've got a set of VW "Bottle Caps" (they look smoother than the stock prius spokes)
its too bad I don't have standard steel wheels,
I could get the wheel disks
but I don't know of an easy/cheep way to mount them to the aluminum wheels (I really don't think I'm gonna spend $3-400 (or more) to do hubcaps

I'm also kicking around the idea of a belly pan and maybe blocking the grill
(as a "Car guy" I'm a bit hesitant when it comes to limiting the coolng system)

MetroMPG 03-18-2014 01:34 PM

Don't forget: the "car guys and girls" who designed your cooling system sized it for a worst case scenario: climbing out of Death Valley, with a full load of passengers & cargo, with the A/C on, and a giant stuffed Barney tied on the roof.

That's why the car guys & girls are now putting active shutters on newer cars. Because it's a big waste to have a gaping open maw on the front of the car all the time. And a variable block still permits "worst case scenario" operation.

If your driving isn't "worst case", you're safe to partially block the grille if you do it progressively and monitor the results.

good point

it's still hard to get away from "making power" mindset
(Cold Air Intake, Lower Temp Thermostat, Water Wetter, to get that cold dense oxygen rich air into the combustion chamber)

BTW,
just topped my truck off for the first time
kinda curious how she does on mostly highway
(drove her 60 miles yesterday, and will do another 150 today)
she's only a 7.3L

the tires on my stock 6 spokes are nearing the end of there life
and I got a line on a set of Honda 14" steelies with new tires on them
if the price is right, I'll probably pick them up next week
and maybe a set of disk hubcaps in the next month or so

KrautBurner 04-03-2014 11:25 PM

steelies fell thru

KrautBurner 04-03-2014 11:27 PM

I've had the car nearly a month now

I've filled her up 6 times
and spent nearly $180

the car is making the commute pretty decent

but my big problem now is

people see a Prius
and expect me to be a "Prius Driver"

I'm getting sick of people not wanting to get outta my way
I've got places to be

KrautBurner 04-04-2014 01:13 PM

figured I'd post some pics

probably a moot point,
being the new wheels are about 1.5lbs heavier and 1/2 inch wider
:o

Cobb 04-04-2014 08:11 PM

Looks a bit boring or a guy with a heavily modded gto. I was expecting stick on flames, graphics on the side, fake hood scoupe, wheelie bars.

Then it would be more suitable for the average ricer :D

KrautBurner 04-08-2014 02:37 PM

and now,

I picked up a 2010 prius II
traded in my 2001 Tahoe

MetroMPG 04-08-2014 02:56 PM

I always thought a gen. 1 Prius was a gateway drug...

(It led me to building an electric car.)

I'd rather plant weed at home and homebrew biodiesel from its seeds to use in a TDI :D

again,

in my area, I just can't afford a TDi in the same condition/miles for near the same price

we did come pretty close to picking up a 2012 Chevy Cruize ECO
but the seats/shifting irritated my wife's back

cRiPpLe_rOoStEr 04-09-2014 12:47 AM

I know, it was just a reference to MetroMPG's comment about the Prius being a gateway drug

Selling pot for other Prius drivers you could quickly get the bucks to buy a fleet of TDIs :D

HyperC 04-09-2014 01:43 AM

Welcome KrautBurner. I recently traded my 12' Camaro SS for my Prius C. The premium gas/poor gas mileage and the fact it sat in the garage all the time led me to trade it. I'm loving the 50-60 mpg's now.

KrautBurner 04-10-2014 01:59 PM

$130 in my F-350 yesterday

kinda hurts compared to $35 to fill up the Prius

but I can't haul 3/4 cord of wood, a lawn mower, a thatcher, 2 chainsaws, and 4 adults in the prius

gk_ghig14 04-12-2014 08:55 PM

Welcome!

I bet the change from the gto to prius is taking a lot of getting used to

He actually kept the GTO.

quietmpg 04-28-2014 05:59 PM

1st you get a Prius. Pretty soon you will be up all night looking for cars on Craigslist to convert to all electric.

Cobb 04-28-2014 07:02 PM

or hell start threads about converting 2 speed slush box land yachts to an ev using lead acid batteries.

KrautBurner 04-29-2014 04:06 PM

all of that is too much work for me
there is a local guy here who converts Swifts (metros) to electric

I just picked up a 1991 Geo Metro 3cyl 5sp
:turtle:

I took her foor a quick spin around town before pulling the trigger,
but to be honest, I'll have doubled my investment before the month is over

(clutch, window track, seat covers, windshield)

Oh wow - old school!

But why?? :D

For s$*%ts and giggles? To actually use?

Because you anticipate the Metro market exploding like it did last time gas prices spiked so you're in it for the inevitable massive profit?

Partly for S/G's, and to acutally use,
I picked this thing up for super cheap, I've always wanted one
I figure by the time I do the clutch, windshield and everything else it needs, I'll be in her about $1,000-1200
(that will be paid back in 6-8 months (fuel alone), not to mention cheaper tires, oil changes, and depreciation of my goat)

also, so I'm not putting the miles on the GTO (even tho I'm probably gonna sell her this summer)
