78.5 MPG tank in Mirage #2

Same. I realize I can get stratospheric (instead of merely excellent) numbers with a 100% P&G regimen, but I rarely do it anymore.

That said, just for S&G, I threw a bunch more P&G at Mirage #2 (The Even Fancier Metro) for its latest tank and saw 78.5 MPG US = 3.0 L/100 km. There's still more where that came from.

Basjoos always said he did NO hypermiling. His route to 70+ mpg was all in modifications. He didn't even drive especially slowly, IIRC.
That's my goal too. I generally kill the engine towards most stops, turns & on some descents, but I would prefer to just set the cruise control on the scenic & back routes I typically travel.

Depending on the power of the engine (i.e., whether I'm driving our "little car" or our "big car"), and depending the length and slope of the uphill, the pulse might last for the entire length of the hill, or it might be a long pulse with a short glide (relatively, compared to pulses and glides on level ground).

Basically, whenever I'm driving, the engine is in one of two states. Either the engine is running, in closed loop (to avoid power enrichment) with the MAP at 90-100 kPa ("wide open"), or it's off. Whatever it takes to keep the engine in one of those two states...that's what I do.

Thanks! I try different strategy, accelerate with almost full throttle, and with just a slightly touch of the gas pedal. How you did it? Did you ever compare?

My personal record is now 5,1 l/100 km E10, but without switching off the engine. Overall speed: 72 km/h over 97 kms.

Then the hat is infinitely more valuable than I anticipated.

First 70+ trip of 2022

Warm-ish weather is here, and I was happy to finally crack 70 in Mirage #3!

This was a one-way trip, though. I think I got 65ish on the outbound leg.

It's not wearing those MPGiata rims though... it's currently rolling on 15" Civic wheels with Bridgestone Ecopia EP422+ tires from a Prius.

Last year I scored a 78 MPG tank in Mirage #2. We'll see if lucky #3 is up to the task.

Thread: 3rd time lucky! Bought yet ANOTHER cheap, 3-cyl Mirage eco-appliance!

This is one of my favorite threads.

I'm trying to repair the odometer on my 1985 Mercedes 190D because it broke at 595K miles. That was five sets of tires ago and almost 20 years. I might just make a stab at things using an electronic speedometer/odometer. The vehicle was listed at 45 mpg by the EPA but I usually got over 50 mpg, tank to tank. With careful driving I could crack 60 mpg but my wife hates it when I roll up the windows and turn off the AC, what with the desert temperatures here in the Inland Regions of Southern California. I keep telling her it's our Covid Weight Loss plan! But she's having none of it.

My goal for the vehicle was to get 70 at 70. Seventy miles per gallon at 70 miles per hour. Stay tuned for heavy body work.

Fuel economy is not really an issue with this vehicle as we run waste oils through it and report only to pay our road taxes. But oh the fun of 70 mpg!

It's over 800k miles estimated at this point.

The engine block, injection pump and 5 speed transmission are original and untouched. Everything else has been changed or rebuilt along the way.

The aftermarket support for these old diesel Mercedes is tremendous and having a prototype machine shop helps tremendously. I've more billet aluminum on this car than the original 900 dollar purchase price would suggest. I keep it ugly so that when I park at Home Depot, all those work trucks skitter out of the way!
