83mpg Festiva- in your dreams

RE: Top Ten List. I mean, I hope you or somebody does that someday, but you didn't do it yet. Read up on the inaccuracies of recording small fills please.

D.O.G. 07-20-2012 07:48 PM

OK, this guy is a bit extreme (0.75 gallons!!), but he's not the only one to be recording small fills.

What gets up my nose is, some then using that inaccurate data to justify percentage increases for various (unicorn) mods.

It can be frustrating waiting for a full tank to be used (or even a half tank), for those of us who have no instantaneous FE display, but that's the only way you'll get half decent data.

Being patient is nearly driving me nuts while I wait for my next fill at the moment, but because I want believable results, I have to. :snail:

I couldn't be arsed into going to the gas station to but a gallon in to log some absurd mileage in my log, and I have a gas station about a mile from my house that's down hill all the way.

euromodder 07-21-2012 05:38 AM

My latest fill was only 0.99 gallon :o

If I want to see what's possible without DPF regeneration, it's got to be a short fill anyway.

i remember when i made the top ten list! Ahhhh good times!

Just filling up itself is inaccurate. when I record mileage, I put the mileage down, and the gasoline I just put it. That isn't necessarily what I burned on the last tank, its what I put back to replace it. Iv seen my car take 10 to well over 13 gallons from empty (light on) depending on the pump, and the person putting it in. I rescued my G/F with my car, and had to let her use it for a few days, and my fill-up error was insane. My last 4 entries were (MPG) 26.20, 38.38, 21.27! and 42.49!! It all averages out, but you need a few consistent fill ups in a row to set a trend. One optimum trip is great @ that mileage, but its averages over time that will impress the most.

This is true. And the best advice I received on this site to mitigate the pump error problem is always refuel when the tank is as close to empty as practical, always use the same pump, always fill at the slowest rate-setting on the handle, always stop filling on the first click. I also always adjust my UG calibration at each fill, as needed. Because it is generally only a quart or less off relative to the pump, I know if something really weird has happened.

Now, if you live in a state like NJ, where self-serve is not legal, then you have some bigger challenges for the above method. You could probably tell the attendant to please not fill past the first click.

Those are pretty big differences, I wouldn't blame fueling inaccuracy for them if you put more than 2 gallons in.

I'm not too crazy about getting my fillups to be 100% consistent. I generally fill when the gauge is between 1/2 and 1/4 tank, which is about 8-9 gallons. I'll probably start filling to where I can see it when I start adding mods.

wow, that's a huge difference. i fill when i have about 1/3 of a tank left and my results are all within about 34-37mpg

bhazard 07-22-2012 11:20 PM

Best I ever got with my stock festiva was 53 mpg cruising across Michigan behind a semi. I've heard of some others pushing 60 mpg cruising at like 45 mph...

Averages matter, outliers don't and fill errors only carry so far. I'm really looking forward to his next tanks- a tiny car with a manual, who knows where you can take it? Whatever recording errors might be happening, it looks like he's going to be turning in some impressive numbers.

Frank Lee 07-23-2012 02:01 PM

Time will tell... maybe.

brucey 07-23-2012 03:01 PM

I had a regular route where I drove 160 miles each way, and would fill up each at each stopped, this worked out to about 1/4 tank (4.5~ gallons) eventually I realized that one direction was lower and always got better gas mileage to show it, so I would just fill up once a day since the car would still have 1/2 a tank at the end of the day.

As long as he's inputting EVERY ounce, the averages will fix themselves.

They were mostly empty, and my G/F did the 21.mpg fill up, and she managed to get 13.99 gallons in that little tank. So of course, I did my normal driving, and got like 450 miles on the tank, then when I refilled when it was empty, it would only take ~11 gallons. Normally I wait till the light comes on, then fill up on slowest setting on the pump, and stop at the first click.

And now for something completely different...

Take a look at climbinghalfdome's 1993 Metro fuel log (he is currently at #7 on the overall FE list). It's not what you think.

And you Yanks often think we have a nanny state in Europe ?
LMAO :)

You'll be hard pressed to find a place where they'll still pump gas for you, over here.

roosterk0031 07-24-2012 12:37 PM

How about the #1 over epa bike, xr500 rated at 18 mpg city hwy & comb.

With a xr600 I've was probably close to that FE riding an enduro trying to average 18 mph thru the woods, maytbe worst cause I couldn't keep going that fast for the 3-4 hour ride hardly ever getting out of 2nd.

rmay635703 07-24-2012 02:25 PM

I once pushed my cobalt down a hill and went over 1 mile, I guess I take the cake for the most efficient car on the planet using only the motive force of my 180lb body to drive 1 mile. If I could have filled it after that one mile would not have accepted any fuel and thus would have infinity MPG.

OMG He has all the fuel logs of his car since he bought it in 93! [edit:Except 2007-2010] That's awesome!
