97 Ford Ranger

From what I read, I can get around 20 mpg with the 4x4 ranger 4.0L auto.
Haven't started using it yet to drive to work. Plan to check MPG for a few weeks, then make changes and see if anything makes a solid improvement.
Anyone have any luck squeezing a few more miles per gallon out of one of these rigs?
I'm thinking electric fan and a tonneau cover might help? Maybe a lower front bumper and grill block too?

Must be nobody has any experience with the rangers?

I can talk about the 3.0 a/t 2wd Ranger, but that doesn't directly help you.

I can also mention other pickup truck things that may be helpful.

I did a fan delete on my F150 several years ago. Once in a while it would be nice to have an electric fan on there though.

4 cylinder 5 speed with a 3.45 axle here. I did a grille block, 15 inch wheels with Bridgestone Ecopia tires. A 4 liter V6 with an auto is going to have a tough time getting to 25 MPG.

97 b2300 here. same as the ranger.
but mine is only 2.3l and 2wd. Oh, and it's manual. lol pretty much every possible difference we could have, but I've put an air dam on it and maxed out tire pressure... and that's about it. I'm getting a solid 30mpg from it.

The mods you mentioned should definitely help you out.

An underbody pan may also be a good resource to improve the aerodynamics, and if you could seal the gap between the cab and the truck bet that would also help.

I tried sealing it with a black garden house. IT MADE SO MUCH NOISE whenever the truck bounced or flexed in any way

But it can still be done with other materials, which would provide a better result. Even the good old Silvertape could be used :D

How about water pipe lagging like people use for grill blocks? It's just foam so it shouldn't make any noise.

whostean 05-29-2014 10:45 PM

I'm a little uncomfortable with putting tape on the truck as of now, but I'm sure that will go away as I dive deeper into this lol

The foam is a great idea though! Shame too, cus i just returned some that were too skinny to stay wedged in the grill...
