AC Compressor Delete?
My AC system didn't work and had no charge left. I gutted all of the hard lines and hoses to free up space in the engine bay and remove the extra weight.
The AC compressor is still part of the drive belt system and I would assume puts load on the drive system and probably weighs a lot as well. Anybody have any experience trying to remove this and either gut it (turn it into a simple pulley attached to nothing) or install some kind of pulley to maintain the original drive belt path? Do you think there is worthwhile savings to be had in this? |
you can just buy a pelley for you car model thet dosent come with the a/c
there is 2 kind of pulley for every car the longer for the model with a/c and the shorter for the model with no a/c |
when the clutch isnt engaged, the loss should be very similar to any other idler pulley. pulley typically weighs more than just an idler though, so its having a bit of a flywheel affect.
i would see if your car or another with a similar engine was ever availible w/o a/c. often times you can get a simple pulley that will bolt in place of the a/c compressor. gutting your compressor isnt going to be worth it. |
It might also be possible to re-route the belt so that an extra pulley isn't needed. I know that a few Dodge Dakota people have done this in addition to removing their A/C compressors.

Did an a/c delete on my Tempo, along with idler delete, tensioner delete, alternator "gear" down, and water pump "gear" down. It all works quite well and the belt is about half the length of stock. Lots of ugly dead weight off the front of the car. No data points for mod effectiveness though. There's a thread on it here someplace.

I removed the A/C compressor on a Toyota and replaced the belt with a shorter one for the model without A/C.
Don't forget the A/C 'radiator' and associated bits. |
I'm going to install my vacuum guage this weekend. While I'm under the hood I'll take a look and see if it's possible to simply remove the compressor from the loop with a shorter belt or not.
