Ac Rewire

I have a 5hp,208-230v ac motor and on the plate it shows instructions on how to rewire for high/low voltage.I was wondering if this can also be rewired to 100-120volts?Can anyone help me?Thanks.Vincehttp://forum.ecomodder.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

It can most likely be wired for 120 volts. I did this with a 1hp motor and it worked fine. The wiring depends on the motor normally there is a diagram or numbering order on the inside of that cover. Sometimes you can look it up on the manufacturers website.

Good luck. Cody.

Cody,Iowe you an apology.I reread what i posted and realised that i left out this detail;the motor is 208-230/460v and the diagram is for the choice of high or low voltage and so the options are obvious in that way but i was wondering if i could further split the 208-230 setting to half or so?Really appreciate your responce and sorry i gave the wrong details, vince

Your motor is probably 3 phase, right?

If so, there's no easy way to make it 120V single phase.

I could be wrong.

But i want to make it a 120v and keep it 3phase.

I'm fairly certain you can just run 120 to it, and it will just spin half as fast.

What are you going to use the motor for?

In general, you can't plug 3 phase stuff into single phase and expect anything good to happen. It will probably just sit there and hum until it is damaged or catches on fire.

If you're going to plug it into a VFD (variable frequency drive), then we could talk about 3 phase stuff on single phase residential electricity.

Finest regards,

Hi Solarguy; This is as i say 3ph and that is fine but being that its only 5hp i was hoping to rewire it for the lower voltage(208-230) and use a ac controller(curtis/kelly/etc) not a vfd because i didn't think i could get one small and cheap enough.I wanted to use it in a lightweight car conversion.I also thought that if i could lower the voltage to say 115/120 this may even make it all the more usable seeing that its such a small motor,it might not work but im trying to find that out because i can get this motor for $50.Thanks,i know i might be grasping at straws id just like to get started!

Check MetricMind.com

He's done a 3 phase EV conversion on a CRX, I believe he'll build and sell controllers that you need for them.

Hey,Geez,Solarguy,Csht and whoever is following this post;AC is too rich for my blood and im going back to DC for a conversion, thanks for your interest and time,Vince.
