Added advanced stats to the individual fuel log pages

Check it out: Gas Mileage () - EcoModder.com

Will work on more stats and updated graphing tomorrow :thumbup:

Matt Herring 08-11-2009 10:54 AM

Nice work...like the stats...thanks bro!

Matt Herring 08-11-2009 11:00 AM

You might have jumbled something in the individual logs for individual tanks. Instead of the mpg number for each tank it now says "US" for each tank. Check your fuel log to see what I'm talking about.

RandomFact314 08-11-2009 11:16 AM

I think that it would be a really good idea to put "money saved" and have it go off of the EPA line, get miles driven over EPA rating and times that by the average fuel cost or even the fuel costs we listed, but I guess that will only work with people who actually listed the prices they spent like me :)

Fixed! Thanks for the heads up.

Will work on the total saved as well though, both in gallons and in terms of dollars

SVOboy 08-11-2009 11:55 AM

Added money and gallons saved!

Awesome! that was quick...

SVOboy 08-11-2009 12:08 PM

Well, I thought it would take longer but I realized I'd already programmed those functions for the full-site stats, so it was easy to tweak for individual use

SVOboy -

I can't tell what I am doing wrong. I have these numbers in my fuel log :

Quote:

* Lifetime Fuel Economy: 42.5
* 90-day Fuel Economy: 44.33
* 3-tank Fuel Economy: 45.56
* EPA Rating (% over): 27 (64.1852%)
* Total fills: 153
* Average cost per gallon: $2.95
* Average cost per fill: $15.89
* Average cost per mile: $0.07
* Total gallons used: 827.08
* Total miles traveled: 35153.8
* Total cost: $2439.89
* Total saved: 223.31 gallons
* Total saved: $658.76
* Average tank distance: 229.76
When I take my total miles divided by my total MPG I get these total gallons :

35153.8 / 42.5 = 827.14

If I divide the miles by EPA MPG I get these gallons :

35153.8 / 27 = 1301.99

When I subtract the two I get

1301.99 - 827.14 = 474.76 Gallons Saved

But according to my fuel log I saved 223.31 gallons.

What is wrong with my computation?

Hi,

I have a question about the costs: I only started logging the price near the peak sometime last year. So, is the average cost (of what I have logged) per gallon applied to the whole fuel log to get the cost savings, etc.?

SVOboy 08-11-2009 10:17 PM

I'll check out the issue with the savings, but here's the actual thing the site is using:

Quote:

$saved_indy = round((($total_indy_gallons * ((100 + $epa)/100)) - $total_indy_gallons), 2);

cfg83 08-11-2009 10:47 PM

SVOboy -

Ok. I don't think that equation is right. Here's what happens to me :

Code:

( $total_indy_gallons * ((100 + $epa)/100)) - $total_indy_gallons
=>
( $[827.08] * ((100 + $[27])/100)) - $[827.08]
=>
( $[827.08] * ((127/100)) - $[827.08]
=>
( $[827.08] * (1.27) - $[827.08]
=>
1050 - 827
=>>>>>>>>>> 223

Now, assuming that "$total_indy_miles" exists as a variable *AND* $epa is not zero, I wrote this :

Code:

$saved_indy =
round
(
  (
  ( $total_indy_miles / $epa) - $total_indy_gallons
  ), 2
);

SVOboy 08-11-2009 10:49 PM

Woops. I wasn't thinking! So many things broke on the site today...:p

I'll go in and fix tonight!

McTimson 08-11-2009 10:55 PM

Code:

[ (Total Miles / EPA Rating) - Gallons Used] * Avg cost per gallon
is what I was thinking

SVOboy 08-11-2009 11:12 PM

Tell me if the current results look good to ya'll

Matt Herring 08-12-2009 12:29 AM

Everything looks tight on the fuel logs...the stats are great...nice work bro!

My $ saved is a little disappointing though. I thought 13 mpg over EPA would save me more than $66. But, I've only spent $233+ in gas over those 4+ months so I guess it makes sense. Although over the course of a year I might have a tough time persuading a non-hypermiler Prius driver to follow my lead if I'm only saving a couple hundred bucks a year by getting 60 mpg vs. getting their 46 mpg...just a thought.

Compared to my former 4runner over the past 4+ months I have saved more than $500 on gas though so the switch to the Prius feels alot better thinking that way.

SVOboy 08-12-2009 12:34 AM

We could probably have a calculator for former vehicles, as well :) More on the to do list!

Matt Herring 08-12-2009 12:58 AM

Maybe some type of worksheet similar to the one that is on the site to calculate cd would work where you could use your current vehicle stats to compare them to "x" car. Thinking something simple where you could enter a random combined epa in a box, miles driven, cost per gallon, etc. and it would formulate how much gallons, fuel, etc. you can save/have saved vs. the "x" car.

This would be a good tool for the prospective car buyer also to figure out how much money/fuel they would save if they were driving a 20, 30, 40, 50 mpg vehicle vs. their current car. Might be a good calculator to bring non-ecomodders to the site as well if they picked it up on a google search. While calculating their possible mpg in the worksheet they might join ecomodder too!

All of these things you are working on are great SVO! A few of the items (overall ecomodder garage stats, top 10 lists, etc.) might be good to add as links on the front page of the site for easy access. I find myself going to my subscriptions page or the garage to find the threads that have those links. Would be quick if I could go to the homepage and find all of the links for this great info...more work...sorry!

SVOboy 08-12-2009 01:12 AM

Yeah, I've been lax on linking since it's all beta right now. I'll try to get on it soon, but right now I'm putting my plans on hold to fix the mysql error issue :(

I was wondering when you'd start to notice that SVOboy has been stealing gas from your tank when you're not looking;)

GreenCarAlbum Garage - GreenCarAlbum

Been testing out the flash app for fuel log graphing, except things are backwards, not sure how to fix it but it looks good.

SVOboy -

Can we project the total savings of Ecomodder to the USA "as if" everyone drove the way we do? It's far from a perfect corrollation because the "inventory" of our garage is different from the national inventory, but I think it's a good question to ask.

CarloSW2

SVOboy 08-15-2009 07:56 PM

I think we could easily just use the percent over EPA for that sort of thing? We just need some reliable stats on national use :)

orange4boy 08-16-2009 01:16 AM

I just thought of another which may have already been considered:

Tonnes of CO2 saved/not emitted.

Disregard if duplicated.

Love the new stats. LOVE them!

I know this is not a stat issue but a fuel log issue:
I am stumping for ton-mpg because it is one way to have a relative, albeit limited, measure of efficiency. I will never get the Egg up to the 60's in mileage but I would like to be able to compare with other vehicles to see how far up I could still go. The simplest way would be ton-mpg.
EG: The heavily modded 1.77 ton egg can get about 33mpg on the highway. This equals 59 ton mpg. The more lightly modded one ton Vegan powah! gets 65.5 ton-mpg. So you see... I'm catching up to you... Muahahahaaa
Otherwise there is no way to easily get perspective on the numbers short of tracking down the data one bit at a time.

Quote:

Ton miles equal ton weight times miles traveled, the whole divided by gallons of gasoline consumed

Southcross 08-17-2009 01:40 AM

how about data like "miles per year" or "12 month mileage" or sumptin?

cfg83 08-17-2009 01:57 AM

I second your "Tonnes of CO2 saved/not emitted". I was thinking about that today.

itsnotme1988 08-18-2009 08:22 PM

I'd like to see cost per mile/tank

kstruve 10-07-2009 07:47 PM

I think that "Average Tank Distance" should be named "Average Miles Between Fills". The "Tank Distance" metric implies that this is how far you can go on one tank of gas, which would need to take into account our fuel tank's capacity. i.e. Avg MPG X Tank Capacity.

I'm not sure how useful it is to know how often we fill up our tanks, unless that is compared to something static.

Suggestion: Change it to Average Tank Range (based on our 90-Day MPG and tank capacity) and compare it to Estimated EPA Tank Range if we were only getting EPA gas mileage.

For example with my car:
EPA MPG = 20
90-Day MPG = 28.47
Tank Capacity = 15.9 Gallons

EPA Tank Range = 318 miles
Average Tank Range = 452.7 miles

So, my maximum range per tank is 42.4% further than EPA range. (Of course this is identical to "% over EPA MPG", so maybe the percentage measurement is redundant.)

The 90 day fuel economy and the EPA Rating % over are not showing up. Can anyone help?

Lifetime Fuel Economy: 22.39
90-day Fuel Economy: 0
3-tank Fuel Economy: 23.89
EPA Rating (% over): 19 (0%)
Total fills: 80
Average cost per gallon: $3.26
Average cost per fill: $41.79
Average cost per mile: $0.15Total gallons used: 1024.34
Total miles traveled: 22935.2
Total cost: $3339.34
Total saved: 182.78 gallons
Total saved: $595.86
Average tank distance: 286.69

I'd love to see a way to upload a .txt or .csv spreadsheet import function. I use an iPhone app that can email me a log file, which I can format in a spreadsheet program, and it would be great if I could upload a formatted log, instead of entering in a few months of data by hand.

Yeah, I second this. I kind of like your reporting stuff a little better than Fuelly, but I just don't want to take the time to enter all the past info in....
