Belly Pan on the Saturn

There was a link posted a while back for an article by AutoSpeed? about installing a belly pan on the prius.

I thought I'd go ahead and try it. I didn't want to use coroplast since I don't think it holds up over time and has enough durability, so I bought some ABS plastic. Not cheap, about $2 per square foot. Made a cardboard template and simply cut it out.

It's mounted with four sheet metal screws in front and is held up with releasable zip ties in back. It takes less then 5 minutes to take off and the only thing it covers up is the fluid drain on the radiator.

So far, my perception is that it's a smoother ride, and noticably quiter on the highway. I'm thinking of doing something similar with the rear end next.

Thanks for the pix! Did you paint it black or did it come that way? I really gotta get my act together and do this too.

It came black. One side was very smoooth, the other had a sand texture to it.

Does anyone know about the link I mentioned with the Prius? I plan on doing front wheel diffusers next. I have some styrofoam that I'm planning on shaping and then covering that with Bondo and attaching it infront of the wheels.

If you're talking about the size of the picture, that was the best I could do. There was a 97 kb limit on my size.

If you're talking about not being able to see clearly, keep in mind that there wasn't much room to take a picture down there.

Thanks for the link. Will be useful for the front wheel mod.

Here's the first picture a little bigger. I think I have the hang of resizing now...

Thanks. The first pic looks much better. I wonder how hard it would be on my Honda. I will have to look under the car and see.

If I still lived back in Seattle, I would just go down to Boeing surplus and buy big sheets of aluminum, or heck, maybe titanium. At least they had that stuff 20 years ago.

Would still love to see more detail.
