Aeromodded Civic VX 72mpg (image heavy)

My Dad's car! Last three tank average is 72mpg. He tried to start a fuel log but he can't logon. He is having trouble getting ahold of the moderators to reset his password, but I will try to answer questions. It may be slow responses because I may need to call him for answers.

Very Cool!!!

YeahPete 04-28-2014 11:18 AM

Wow! What materials did he use for the bumper, the undertray, and the rear?

ecoTex 04-28-2014 11:33 AM

Front bumper is abs. Under tray is 10mm coroplast screwed to 1/8"x2" aluminum flat. The rear elements are all sheet aluminum.

Fat Charlie 04-28-2014 11:34 AM

Is that partial boattail on piece? It's awesome.

Daox 04-28-2014 11:44 AM

Very nice!

ecoTex 04-28-2014 11:54 AM

No, it is several pieces.

The hatch and tailgate are fully fuctional.

This is the prototype for the adjustable cooling shutters. They are separately adjustable for radiator and A/C condenser.
http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/P1010121.jpg
This is the new version on my uncle’s VX. I guess they decided the separate shutters were not necessary.

Impressive numbers! How is he achieving it? EOC, driving really slow, engine/computer mods? Are those wheels factory civic from newer models?

ecoTex 04-28-2014 12:26 PM

Limited EOC, drives 55 on the freeway, he is retired so he drives at off-peak traffic hours. He lives about 45 miles from My uncle's shop and drives in 4-5 days a week, so he is using the car quite a bit. I think the wheels are from a civic hybrid? not sure, I'll update when I talk to him

NachtRitter 04-28-2014 12:45 PM

Very nice work!

They look like early Insight wheels.

1st gen insight alloy space-saver 14x4” which is 1.5” narrower than VX wheels. He says they are worth 1.5-2 mpg. Also, being narrower he was able to make the skirts flush with the uppermost lip of the fenders.
Notice the skirt doesn’t require a “bulge” to clear the bridgestone re92 165/65/14.

darcane 04-28-2014 04:16 PM

I poked around on your photobucket page (Lots of pics up there!), hope you don't mind.

There is a lot going on inside the car too:
http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/P1010155.jpg

What's with the panel between the driver's leg and the shift knob? What about the lever(?) between the shifter and the e-brake? It seems like it would be a little awkward to actually shift...

Motorcycle mirror on the driver's side, right? How is the visibility on that?
http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/P1010096.jpg

That warm-air intake is far more planned out than any other's I've seen. Any objective test results on that?
http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/P1010061.jpg

ecoTex 04-28-2014 04:53 PM

The padded panel is simply a leg rest, the lever is a hand throttle, I believe; the mirror is for the police, he has a convex mirror inside the door.
http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/P1010158.jpg

The WAI is new to me. Looks sweet though. I’ll check with him tonight. It looks like it might be on the car.

wmjinman 04-28-2014 05:03 PM

VERY impressive!!!

Now I know what the White Gnat wants to be when it grows up. :)

Well done!!!

I just noticed in that picture that he appears to have an intake temp gauge just to the left of the steering wheel. More pics of the WAI on the photobucket page, including underhood pics of it installed.

ecoTex 04-28-2014 06:34 PM

The wai is adjustable by choke cable left of steering wheel. It is the same setup as the link in my signature.

I did notice on the original photo, mostly because I have the VX wheels and have been wishing I could manage little or no bulge around the rear fenders on my 1998 civic. Double thanks for that great detail. I also have been wondering about using some lexan I have around from a house project for the tail light area around a similar part boattail.... so cool to see it has been done. Looks like he painted part of the lexan and also drilled into the body to secure the pieces. Is that correct?

sheepdog 44 04-28-2014 08:04 PM

What is the Kammback made out of? What tire's is he running on those spares? Most spare tires are not low rolling resistance despite being thin.

WD40 04-28-2014 08:37 PM

WOW its almost like looking at my car .. only your dads is more refined looking.
Major incentive to refine the looks of mine if I can afford it.
I hope he gets a fuel log going so I can follow it.
Major congrats to him and you.

ecoTex 04-28-2014 10:26 PM

Cali98, it is plexiglass and painted black on the backside where it mates to the quarterpanel, screwed or riveted

ecoTex 04-28-2014 10:45 PM

Gotta put the kids in bed. Sheepdog, aluminum and re32? Can't remember. It is in an earlier post.
Wd40, thanks but....I don't deserve congratulations. My dad and uncle did this car in Memphis. But I wish I could have helped

Gasoline Fumes 04-29-2014 12:48 AM

I love it!

I like the main relay hanging down too! Mine's just like that!
http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/P1010155.jpg

ecoTex 04-29-2014 06:46 AM

Yeah, he left the fuel pump relay accessible in case his kill switch craps out.

ecoTex 04-30-2014 01:45 PM

Here is a pic showing rear dead-on. Notice bellypan vent outlet holes.

Clever.

front plate

DPS and local constabulary will be expecting a front license plate.
Nice project.Nice numbers.Thanks!

ecoTex 04-30-2014 07:13 PM

Haha! He is in Memphis. And coming from you, he will be honored

NeilBlanchard 04-30-2014 07:44 PM

Totally sweet - I am quite jealous. The belly pan and the Kamm back are close to ideal, I think. The twin active grill shutters is just icing on the cake.

This is front page material!

ecoTex 04-30-2014 09:11 PM

Man, if you could make that happen, it would really excite my dad! He wanted everyone to see what he and his brother have been working on.
just having the "ecomodder allstars" commenting on this is pretty cool

Fat Charlie 05-01-2014 07:56 AM

I think he's an "ecomodder allstar" himself, external validation be damned.

I agree!

j12piprius 05-01-2014 09:36 AM

great work ~ awesome results

Your dad's car is an ecomodding model of perfection.

I hope it's okay to ask a few questions.

Is the abs attached to the bumper with rivets, or screws? Is there anything under the abs for bottom support or coverage, or is it open at the bottom? How far are the abs bumper and side skirts from the ground? Does your dad have suggestions where to find reasonably priced abs, and any other details?

Thank you both for sharing and posting the photos. :)

I'm hoping to make my bumper, and several other mods, the same way.

riceburnersi 05-01-2014 03:19 PM

Honda nut and have always been about power, but this has inspired me for a new build.

ecoTex 05-01-2014 11:30 PM

My Dad sent an email tonight with answers to the questions and much more info. I'll post it in the morning. Thanks for the interest y'all are showing!
