Another grill block thread...

I know the current craze fer the new models is to go with an active, computer motor controlled shutter system. Don't ask me how much it would cost to build yer own but I would figure it would be a bunch of money. :(

I know that someone here did a flap type of grill block that was bungee cord based and flipped up at a certain speed. ;)

My thread over at ToyotaNation fer my grill blocks... ;)

Had another crazy (different) idea fer grill blocks fer my T-100. Seeing that I have the PE200 PVC pipe on the top section and smaller ones fer the middle section...engineer them so they stick out away from the grill when the truck is at a stop or slow speed. As the air pressure pushes on the grill blocks when you are traveling at a higher speed, the grill blocks retract into the grill effectively blocking the grill. Maybe an option to lock out the grill block from activating fer heavy tow loads or locking it in place during the cold weather season.

Things I need to figure out...
How far out front the blocks would have to be from the grill to keep the cooling effective at rest/slow speed?
What the compression resistance would need to be to keep the grill block from closing too easily?

Kinda got my inspiration from the Ford F-250 Super Chief truck...and the Spare Bumper. :D

Ideas or thoughts? ;)

I was wondering if you made a grille block with openings covered with very fine screen, as the speed builds more and more air would bypass the screen and go around the car, sort of self limiting by design , then at slow speeds up hills, traffic, etc, the air is pretty free to get to the engine, because your going slower. just have to est the screens size by size and go small enough to cause temps under hood to go up then go one size larger, might work just right . .

Screen grill blocks don't really work, as the air still gets pushed in.

I like the looks of the piping for grill block on your truck. I think it would be a lot of trial and error to get the spring rates to work out, that would be the only problem I see. but you could set up a camera to see when they close and open. For me I think that a temperature controlled opening would be easier to fabricate. Or you could still use the piping and and use a vacuum diaphragm that you could salvage off an old furnace. That way under heavy load the block could open? I am mostly just thinking as I am typing :D but that is how brainstorming works right?
