Another new guy
 

Hi everyone. I'm Joe, and from New Jersey USA, and am an almost retired guy who works on cars for fun. I have been rehabbing cars for several decades now, and am now turning to rehabbing a 2009 Prius. I have lurked on this website for several years, and I thought I'd give myself the challenge of learning to hypermile while I own the Prius.

Since I am a rehabber by nature, I do these kinds of things:
-clean, clean, clean, clean.
-lube, oil, grease, wire brush, grease...
-wash, wax, paint as needed.
-Head gaskets, valve cover gaskets, timing belts and chains, as needed.
-water pumps, etc. as needed.
-brakes as needed.
-brake lines as needed.

So in some ways, I am in the wrong group. I tend to bring sick cars back to health rather than mod them for fuel economy.

But I finally have one that might let me get 60 mpg or more if I really try.

The Coro-plague has done a number on the Dept of Motor Vehicles, so I have a three week wait before I can get an appointment to actually put plates on my Prius. I will have to speak kindly to my baby blue Prius to let it know that is still loved so it does not up and sulk and P away my first tank of gas. My appointment is the 19th, so just a few more days!

Rehabbed any particularly interesting vehicles? There's some love to be found on this forum for various different and older vehicles.

Keep us up to date on what's going on with the Prius. What year, how many miles and color?

Welcome. In Georgia I walk in the tag office and come out 15 minutes later with plates when I got my truck. People really should start demanding more from their government.

In the last couple of decades:
1980 Mazda RX7 120,000 miles, smokey metallic black
1986 VW Jetta Diesel, 45mpg, 235,000 miles
Recently:
2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport, 6cyl, 130,000 miles
1999 Honda Accord 4 cyl, 240,000 miles
2003 Mitsubishi Galant, 4 cyl, 140,000 miles

Current projects:
My daily driver, a 2008 Toyota Corolla, manual, 170,000miles, dark blue
My new toy and obsession, a 2009 Toyota Prius, light blue, 167,000 miles, with a Greenbean rehabbed battery

The most fun of all of these? A toss between the Montero and the RX7. Most fun to drive? The Montero, definitely. The most destructive to the ozone layer? Hard to say, but probably the 14 mpg on the Montie.

So it is time to do penance...

Yup, that is the way it should be. But with NewJersey having the highest fatality rate per 100,000 in the nation, some things like privately contracted government services got cut way back. On the other hand, we have one of the highest inocculation rates, so hopefully it will blow over soon. Stores are no masks, and restaurants are open,so thatis a start.

Sometimes it ends up making more sense to rehab an older beater than going for some newer one.

I was actually considering how a refurbished earlier car may end up leading to a lower environmental footprint, even though they're often pointed out as "dirty" compared to whatever newer econobox intended to replace them. But I'm not so unfavorable to eventually converting from carburettor to EFI, or from some earlier non-sequential to a sequential EFI.

This was the product of two cars, a 1957 body on a 1966 chassis. It went through four iterations -- lime green, British racing green, Baja'd and Sunbug Gold over Imron black.

Back in the 1970s and 80s. My current plan is to put a 36hp engine and a 5-speed in the Superbeetle.
