Any suggestions on mods for a 98 s10 2.2L 5sp?
 

I am new to the ecomodding community. I would appreciate any tips you may have for me.

i have been pondering mods for 96+ s10s myself for a build I am doing this summer and here is a copy of everything I plan on doing

Stage 1:
-Suspension/wheels
-3/5" drop w/ wheel alignment
-lighter mooncap styled rims
-thinner tires
-low rolling resistance tires
Stage 2:
-Motor/driveline/electric
-elctric radiator fan swap
- gas mileage exhaust
-warm air intake
-5th gear swap if possible
-rear end gear swap
-low viscosity oil
-electric water pump
-deep cycle battery
- 4 cyl diesel swap or turbo
-gas mileage chip
-block heater
-led lights
-aluminum driveshaft
-egr replaced/cleaned
Stage 3:
-Aerodynamics
-passenger mirror delete with internal mirror
-driver mirror swapped to more aero design
-front air dam
- grill block
-antennal removal and hole blocked
-passenger winshield wiper removed full setup
-driver windshield wiper lower profiled and longer
-aero side skirts
-96~97 clear headlight bucket covers
-seal holes in frontal area
-mud flap removal
-front wheel arch gap fill
-bumpers front/rear
-rear wheel skirts
-carbon fiber hood with scoop
-hitch boat tail
-tanneu cover or the aero-shell
Stage 4:
-Guages
-scanguage or ultraguage
-vacuum guage not a cheepy
Stage 5:
-weight
-bedliner removal
-spare tire in bed mount removed
-ac removal
-remove rear seat

-aftermarket speakers

Stage 6:
-Advanced Aerodynamics
-fishtailed bed

all this coupled with hypermiling techniques should produce very decent numbers

I just sold a 99 s-dime, 2.2 liter. With an extend cab and 5 speed.
First off I feel your pain for a 2.2 you would think decent mileage I was averaging 20 mpg, luckily with the 5 speed it allowed me to play with the gears and put it in neutral to coast up to stop signs after just doing that I was closer to 26mpgs. Gealii has some great tips the only thing I would add is to do a complete tune of the engine; check the gaps in the spark plugs, keep the oil and air filter clean, and run the max psi in your tires allowed. Start with a full tune up and a Scangauge. Learn to drive better and document your mileage. Replace all lubricants with synthetics. There are people on here with pickups that you can get ideas from.

After that, it depends on how far you want to go with it.

Look up aerohead: he has used aero techniques on lots of vehicles with great success.
Probably has the most experience with aerodynamics.

Then you can go into the mechanics. Change the rear axle ratio to something that slows the motor down on the highway if you don't tow or do serious hauling with the truck.

Reprogram the engine computer for better performance and economy.

Really want to get into the guts of the motor, do a cam swap.

But start with the easy stuff and become a better driver.

Here is what I have done so far with my s10:
Tune up
synthetic oil
changed driving habits
folded back rear view mirrors

I have been able to consistently see 30-31 mpg with these steps alone. I plan on purchasing a scangauge soon, so I can refine my driving habits even further. I am also planning some aero mods for this summer. I found a thread where a guy with an s10 covered his rims with cheap pizza pans and gained about 1.3 mpg on average.

My current goal is 35 mpg.

You are doing real good for what you have. Another thought would be to put airbags on that will allow you lower the ride height where you want it and raise it when you need to carry something. Hey, even Dodge is doing it on their new pickup.

my goal from those suggestions was 40mpg. the pizza pans are a great way to get mpgs for cheap but i am going with the smooth new rims for a cleaner look but to each its own

What would a set of smooth rims cost?

So far I LOVE working on the S10 it is so simple to work on once you remove just about everything on it lol.
