Anybody changed spark plugs in a Gen1 Insight?
Bought the car last weekend.
Today I cleaned the egr plate, gasket, etc . . . . now I would like to change the plugs. I bought plugs at the auto parts store before I did any research, so of course the ones I bought are going back:( Car has 204K miles, and I'm not sure when the last time the plugs were changed, and I get a slight bucking when in lean burn. The egr plate wasn't real bad, I assume somebody had cleaned it recently, but it did seem to help the bucking some Never changed plugs in one before, and I guess you have to match the plugs to the letters. Should I expect three different letters or are they usually all either A,B,C or D? I read you need to pull the coils off first, but haven't seen any videos yet Any tips would be greatly appreciated! |
My best advice is to join the insight forum. From what little I know about the gen1 the plugs are indexed or are suppose to be. This means the electrode faces a certain way seated to avoid messing with the air flow from the valves.

Agrees with Cobb, I don't even have an insight and have joined the insight forums. They are a nice group of people over there. Very comparable to the people here.

I've already been through the forums at Insightcentral, but some of the info concerning the indexing seemed to be conflicting and confusing.
I understand the concept, that the electrode faces in a certain direction, and the correct torque should put it within a certain degree in the hole, depending which specific plug your head requires (A,B,C, or D) Maybe I missed it, but I never did nail down the correct "clocking", because one person said 10 o'clock and another said between 3-6 o'clock on the positioning I'm going to return the generic iridium plugs I got at Autozone and order the correct lettered ones, so hopefully by the time I get them in I'll know the proper positioning |
Become a member there and ask. I'm sure a few members will pitch in. First post I made there was asking for help. They welcomed assisting me. (Was about finding and insight).

The bucking could still be the ERG valve. I would unplug the wires going to it and see if there's a difference. My Insight would buck pretty good, unplugged the EGR and it was great (because I was too lazy to try to actually fix it :P ).

Lol, think I figured it out.
Went to pull the first plug just to check the condition, and lo and behold it turned in my hand! Somebody had only finger tightened it! I'm amazed it ran at all, since I found that all three plugs had only been hand tightened. They were matching OEM NGKs letter "B", which matched the stamped head, in excellent condition, so I cleaned them off, re-gapped and re-installed them and actually torqued them to specs . . . . Cranked it up and it's smooth as butter, where it had previously idled a little shaky. Haven't road tested it yet, but I'm expecting awesome results! |
