Anybody drive a Crd liberty?
 

I almost bought a brand new one when they can out, wondering if anyone here drove one and got some actual numbers. Are they easy to tune for more FE?

Yes. In factory form, it will deliver 30mpg around 60-65 mph. Green Diesel Engineering has a tune that improves that by 10-15%, and city mileage as well.

Lots of potential for areo modding as well, the thing is literally shaped like a brick.

A neighbor had one. Man, heavy . . . But the relative size and mpg looked great. What I have read/heard since is that around 120-150k that assorted weaknesses catch up with them. So, not to buy one (unlike some other diesels).

The VM Motori diesel is not a bad unit, but the relative scarcity of the CRDs will make you have to be scrupulous about maintenance history on a used one. I believe that this is an interference style engine so watch the cam drive condition. There are tuning boxes, exhaust systems and intakes for them and they do help. Just do your homework and find a good connection for parts and service.

If you're looking for a project, buy a Liberty with a blown engine and throw a Cummins 4B into it. I heard of lots of guys that put them into Jeep Wranglers, so I would imagine they would fit. FYI, the 4B (also known as 4BT) is a four cylinder version of the more-popular 5.9L (6.7L after 2007) Cummins, with many of the same parts. Prior to 2007 it was 3.9L, now it's 4.5L. Two things, though, I'm not sure of: 1) Whether the stock tranny can take the torque, 2) the engine is just at tall as the 5.9L/6.7L engine so it might be tricky getting the inline 4 engine under the hood.

If I had the means to do an engine swap, it would not be into a liberty. A 4bt powered newer firebird or mustang is more like it, a Toyota 4runner, something a bit cooler. I red an article of a guy with a 6.2 diesel in an old corvette getting 40 mpg,, that would be moe my style.

A 4bt would be great in about anything. But the trans in the CRD is one of the problems. And, emissions would be the kicker.

Considering the power of a 4bt a half-ton would be a better choice, IMO, with the right mix of manual trans and rear axle gears. The mpg might not be as good as a CRD but the vehicle have a great deal more utility.

That thing really needed a 6 speed stick. I would bet one with the right gears might have gotten 35 mpg.

This guy put a VW TDI in his Liberty, averages 30MPG even with it lifted and all terrain tires. I believe he finished and starts posting mileage results at page 7 or 8. I would love to do something similar with a Cherokee or Explorer.

Does anybody know what rpm the tdi engines turn a highway speed? My 3.9lv8 turns about 22-2300 in overdrive, might be too low for a tdi
