Well back in the day there was a winter like no other around here the winter of 77 -78 the harbor where i work froze over and almost all long island sound was ice bound, I have pictures of myself standing on the ice to chop the salt water ice frozen around my Dad's cabin cruiser, with an axe, anyway there was a legend of a guy who rode his dirt bike with studs out across the harbor, always wondered if it was true till one day last summer I'm talking to a great diesel mechanic around here who services all the fishing boats, and he said it was him,and then he told me he could feel the ice bending under the motorcycle as he drove along, yes he had studs and yes he was crazy and lucky !!

There were ice races on the frozen lakes with cars or motorcycles using studs or spikes.
Mountain bikes have used them around here with success. Some states limit the the use of studs to November through April.

Back in the mid-late sixties, We used to play moto-polo on our bikes on a flooded field. We used to take self tapping screws and run them into our MX tires. You did not follow too closely though, because they would feel like bullets hitting you when they would fly out if not properly installed.

as far as studded tires go My Ranger doesnt move without them all hills up here and pretty scary to slide sideways down a hill against oncoming traffic, so studded tires are a go and a must for me, .

When I was going to college, I remember seeing a guy that rode his Harley Davidson every day, all year round. Parked in the same spot and never missed a day, no matter the weather.

While this would be no big deal in Florida, I went to college in Fairbanks, Alaska and saw temps in the -50F range many times. He had studded tires and heated grips plus a port for heated gear. Even so, I doubt it was a warm ride...

Worked with a guy that used to race motocross in the summer and in the winter they would use the hex head self tapping screws and race indoors on hockey rinks.
