All 80s and 90s non turbo volvos have a thermostatically controller hot/cold intake that usually fails on the hot only side after 10 years. Fixing the intake to breath only cold air all the time usually nets 10-15% FE improvement as well as power.

I get 10-15% more with hot air, especially in winter

I'm working on a hot/cold 'switchable' intake to do A/B testing on my 93 escort wagon. I intend to do a/b testing for a couple of months ('full tank' method of measuring gas consumption).
Side issue - the air intake has a restriction before the filter, which necks down the air channel to approximately a 1" throat - it is part of a plastic channel which resembles a human 'stomach with intestine', with a large vacuum reservoir just after the restriction. I removed this and see immediate improvements in 5th gear acceleration, pulling power. Less load on the engine with freer air supply is my guess. |
Intake restriction often improves torque. And FE too I think
