Anyone made a Kamm back extension around a trunk-mount bike rack?

I have seen it suggested many times. Amazon and Walmart have them for $40 (Allen Sports Deluxe Trunk Mount 2-Bike Carrier : Amazon.com : Sports & Outdoors), but would the rack itself be as useful as the straps? You can purchase replacement ones for $4 from Replacement Upper Strap for Yakima Quickback 2 and 3 Bike Carriers Yakima Accessories and Parts Y90214, although those come without buckles, so it might be simpler to purchase the full rack.

This is an awesome idea. I have been thinking about a possible kammback, but this really makes me think its a good idea.

The trick will be to have the the bikes small enough to fit within the aero envelope.

Neil, it would just be a Kammback. There would not remain any bike-carrying capacity.

What if the bikes were mounted lengthwise, not sideways? You might have to remove front wheels and/or seats to stay within limits.

I had the same thoughts of using the mounting straps for a 'removeable kammback' before my trip.

Part of the idea came from a metal luvor kit that I Put on a fastback car in the 80's. The top part was hinged so you could clean the glass under it. The hinge wedged under the glass trim to keep the top attached.
todays cars dont allow for something to be wedged under the trim.

THe bike carrier would certainly provide some rigidity to attch a frame to.

Bought my trunk mounted bike rack today.
And some PVC piping for the frame.
And some soft stuff to cover it, so it does not scratch my car.
And a LOT of zip ties.

Hopefully I can get a little done each day this week - no day off until Friday.
