AREAS TO AVOID IN CROSS COUNTRY MPG TRIPS
courtesy of ExxonMobil ETHANOL IS FORCED ON CONSUMERS OF SEVERAL STATES AND METRO AREAS, REDUCING MPG BY ABOUT 30%. ALL OXYGENATED GASOLINE CONTAINS ETHANOL. FUEL UP OUTSIDE THESE AREAS FOR DRAMATIC MPG GAINS! I DO - AND I GUARANTEE THAT IT WILL MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE. http://www.api.org/aboutoilgas/other...ements_Map.pdf http://www.exxon.com/USA-English/Fil...p%20100102.pdf IF YOU REALLY LOVE ETHANOL, YOU CAN MODIFY YOUR ENGINE WITH HIGHER COMPRESSION AND DIFFERENT TIMING TO RUN ON ETHANOL-RICH GASOLINE OR PURE ETHANOL FOR AROUND $2000 TO $5000. BUT IN CONVENTIONAL GASOLINE ENGINES, INCLUDING "FLEX FUEL" TYPES, ETHANOL SERVES A PRIMARY PURPOSE AS AN OXYGENATOR AND A SECONDARY PURPOSE AS A LOWER QUALITY FUEL. THIS ROBS MILEAGE AND THROWS AWAY ANY SO-CALLED "GAINS" FROM AGRICULTURAL FUELS. IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBTS ABOUT THIS, SIMPLY MAINTAIN A MILEAGE LOG ON YOUR NEXT CROSS COUNTRY TRIP - USING THE ABOVE MAPS. THE DIFFERENCE IN MPG WILL BE LIKE A SLAP IN THE FACE. THE ETHANOL MANDATE IS A PAYOFF TO THE FARM STATES BY POLITICIANS. AND NOTE THAT MOST OF THE FARM STATE AREAS DO NOT HAVE ETHANOL MANDATES. I ASKED A FARMER WHY THEY DON'T RUN THE ETHANOL THEY MAKE IN THEIR OWN FARM EQUIPMENT. "WE'RE NOT STUPID," HE TOLD ME. "WE CAN'T GET ANY POWER OUT OF IT!" |
Pardon my french, but don't be stupid.

Edit: I found the link.
So Exxon/Mobil is recommending to not use ethanol? I tried a 10% blend with ethanol and a non-ethanol. There was no difference in mileage. This was with the same fuel table and ignition table. |
Pure ethanol (e100) has 76,100 BTU/gal.
Gasoline has 114,500 BTU/gal. You're saying mixing has no effect. Really? Perhaps you need to pay closer attention. |
but noone (that i know of) mandates more than e10, so youre looking at 3% reduction in btu, not 30%
i do seem to get slightly better mileage when i've ran straight gas vs. e10 (i've only ran like 5tanks of it) but, where i live, e10 is cheaper. i get better miles per dollar with it. i run e10 unless straight gas costs less than 3% more, which almost never happens here. |

Perhaps you need to pay closer attention. |
Using E10 does slightly decrease MPG, but it's just not feasible for it to be anywhere near 30%. Even if the ethanol didn't contribute at all, it would just be a 10% reduction...but the ethanol DOES contribute.

But trust me I'm very careful when refilling to get the same amount per tank. (I use the same level spot at the same fuel-station, I check the fuel level with a measuring rod, I take notes on the ambient temperatures to account for the coefficient of volume expansion for gasoline being 950x10-6, I test the alcohol % of the fuel)etc. I thought for sure I would see somewhat a gain when running the non-ethanol fuel. But after seeing none I decided it wasn't worth it at this point and time in tuning my car for maximum FE. So now I have been doing all my test with the 10% blend. |
Couldn't see either link.
Also wtf are you talking about? 30%... |
