Hello -

My friend just e-mailed this article to me :

Killacycle Green Motorbike Unveiled At Driving Sustainability 2008 Car Show In Reykjavik, Iceland

In the past, their relatively low speeds and lack of range mean electric vehicles have suffered from some less than glowing press.

But now, Iceland is trying to convince the rest of the world that the future of driving is electric, after all.

With 99% of its electricity provided by renewable energy, Reykjavik is the ideal setting for the Driving Sustainability 2008 car show.

Among the mean, green machines on display, is the fastest electric motorbike in the world.

The Killacycle has a top speed of 168mph and goes from 0-100 in a second.

For a typical run, it needs only as much energy as a hair dryer would use over 15 minutes, while its batteries recharge in just four minutes.

It is the brain child of Bill Dube, who invented the Killacycle in his garage in Colorado.

He told Sky News: "It's just a giant cordless drill with wheels, a 500 horse power cordless drill with wheels. It has a battery, motors and a throttle, just like you'd have a trigger on your drill. And there are no carbon emissions. ...

"The Killacycle has a top speed of 168mph and goes from 0-100 in a second."

You'll have to show me the 0-100 before I'll believe it. I don't see how you could possibly avoid breaking the rear wheel loose, and then you'd just sit there in a cloud of burning rubber...

Yah, 0-100 in 4 seconds maybe

Well 0-100 in 4 seconds is still very impressive and it's electric. It doesn't say what kind of range it has though.

i_am_socket 09-23-2008 10:38 AM

Toss in some kind of gearing and don't drive it 168 mph and I'm sure it'd get at least a decent range.

95badbird 09-24-2008 01:16 PM

it more than likey goes faster than 168 mph.

It was clocked at 168 mph in the 1/4 mile...

see vid..

What is the sound that sounds like a rocket igniting when it launches? It sounds like what I would expect during the burnout.

95badbird 09-25-2008 11:00 AM

Thats the rear slick..

You mean the tire? I've never been much of a drag racer. Can you elaborate?

Its just one of the many sounds that happens when you try and put a lot of torque to a tire....it wants to stick, and at the same time it wants to spin....but it won't(unless you overcome the actual limits of the tire itself)....I'm sure theres a much better explanation to it, but I don't know how to explain it very well.
I'm sure my slicks do it to, but you can't hear them over the exhuast and engine noise.

I think it is the sound of the wheelie bars scraping the track.

I'm sorry to be such a nerd about a stupid sound, but it's just fascinating that a tire can make that noise.

The Atomic Ass 10-19-2008 12:07 AM

I hear 2 distinct sounds, one sounds like an RC car, :p the other like ripping cloth.

The first would be the motor, the latter the tire. And it is an interesting sound at that. :D

BTW, slightly off-topic, but is anyone else tired of hearing about "silent" electric cars? All the ones I've seen make as much or more noise than some quiet gas engines, and I rather like a car that lets people know when I'm moving. As in a warning to other drivers and pedestrians, yes, I really am accelerating at a rate of 32fps^2 ;)

0-100 KILOMETERS PER HOUR fellas... they're in Europe.... I think Bill said it takes about 2 seconds, not 1.

dichotomous 11-22-2008 11:42 AM

remember that a typical 1.0litre supersport bike (about $12,000) goes 180mph and goes 0-60mph in about 2.5 seconds. and gets mid to high 20's MPG.

blueflame 11-26-2008 06:48 AM

There saying 0.8sec 0-60mph.

Whats the 1/4 mile like in a superbike?
The killacycle is 7.89sec

Not if you take the muffler off.
But, I don't understand the argument.
Even modern ICE vehicles with good mufflers are very difficult to hear from behind when you're biking.

Motorcycles need to have some sound report for safety reasons because they're more difficult for other motorists to see.
