Audi A2 1.2Tdi tiptronic problem?
 

Hi guys, today I went to take a look at an Audi A2 1.2 tdi. I didn't dare buy it because i wasn't sure the gearbox was Ok. I have never before driven any automatic whatsoever, so i didn't even know what to look out for. Well, the car shifted gears ok, i think, but when i pressed the throttle all the way, the engine was just hitting high revs without changing to the next gear. If I just lift off the throttle a bit, the engine shifts to the next gear? Is this gearbox faulty guys? Thanks!

With the throttle to the floor it should rev to the redline and then shift to the next gear. I tested a DSG recently and didn't like the way it just wanted to rev, most of us on here use low revs/ high throttle which the DSG won't allow.

Personally, I'd wait to find a manual.

The insight does something similar in sport mode in sequential selection. It wont shift til almost 6 grand. :eek:

Thanks guys. This is not a tiptronic or a dsg, as some of you know, for sure. This is some kind of a semi-automatic gearbox, an ordinary manual with little gremlins inside shifting for you :) I still dont know whether the behaviour of the gearbox is normal. One mechanic told me it is, the other the opposite....

In the case of a 'robotized manual', it sounds like normal operation. Shifting such a gearbox at full throttle would be very damaging, so the gearbox waits for you to lift off before it can select the next gear.

Could be normal, could be a throttle cable or linkage adjustment. It's something that is best handled by atech who is very familiar with the transmission and or search the web with your description.

Probably normal but it does not seem that way to you , having never driven one before, but it should shift at redline when floored.

This topic is an year old, but I thought I would give tell my view in case anyone else wonders about this specific issue.

I have this car and I can understand why this would concern someone testing it. In normal mode (D) it shifts at very high rpm. It goes maybe 200-300 rpm above what is red line on the tachometer. Also at high rpm the diesel engine is not very effective, so it does not accelerate very well so it feels like it takes for ever for the car to shift to higher gear.

I don't know how accurate my tachometer is, and I don't consider the VAG tacho very good quality. In another car with the same tacho I noticed I was hitting the rev limiter 500 -700 rpm too early when cornering compared to accelerating in straight line.
