Auto Transmission advice

1993 civic hatchback automatic tranny. 1.5L engine

I bought this car with a bad transmission which I replaced from a salvage yard. The replaced transmission exploded in the differential popping both axles out along with it. The fluid coming out was dark grey on the axles which tells me that the shop didn't drain the torque converter..simply bolted up the used tranny and filled it up. Dark grey from what I know is shavings and burrs.

Some people say don't even try to get a rebuild because of thier past experiences.

Option 2 is used transmission from salvage yard again.

Option 3 is donate to charity for tax write off. (Although worthless without tranny I assume)

What is the best thing I can do in this situation. Great MPG 40 hwy
I have no trust in the average transmission shop, I don't know how well they will work on the tranny. Shopping around for a rebuilt 1993 auto tranny civic is around 1000.

Thanks for the advice.
purchase price 1200 + used tranny with install 700 =1900 invested to this point.
